It's been a month between reviews but hopefully it's been worth the wait.

I listened to Mastodons music time and time again , I hear why the get all the praise , however no matter how many times I listen to them, I cannot get into there music. Nothing seems memorable to me. I am glad that the mainstream finally picked a heavy band to follow though, doesn't hurt our scene that there from Atlanta either.

Yeah, there aren't really that many hooks in the songs, but since most of them are short 3 minute bursts there's no need for them. They seem like they're more of a "listen to the whole album straight through" band instead of "write 3 songs for singles and make the rest of the album a bunch of crap filler" band. I like it because it's more of a really really hard rock album instead of another cookie cutter blah death metal album to throw on the pile. They have a pretty unique sound going.

If Greg Allman ever started a metal band it would probably sound something like Mastodon.

I just think it's cool that a local (ahem) band has achieved some major success. "A rising tide lifts all boats".....the more bands who get noticed from here, the more the labels will be interested in checking Atlanta out.

Here are the pics from their in-studio performance during WREKage, June 23, 2000:

(I didn't take the sideways ones.....I think that was Jonathan G. or Sam C. :))
