Best Movies Of 2008 Thus Far

There's a couple of threads floating around here on the subject of cinema, but nothing that's really centric to this given calendar year. So...well, does it really need further explanation?

Here are my top 6. (This is a metal board, after all...)

#1 - - Gomorra. The best mafia movie I've seen in 20 years. All of your arthouse friends will be raving about it when some devil-worshiping mega-conglomerate scores the limited U.S. release rights next year. Just remember who was praising it first, though...

#2 - - Be Kind, Rewind. Every now and then, you hear about a film that's so simple in its uniqueness that you can't help but say "I wish I would've thought of that". The most I've laughed this year, at the movies or otherwise, and it's uplifting to boot.

#3 - - The Orphanage. Horror they way it should be done.

#4 - - Son Of Rambow. A wonderful, quaint little British film about a kid that grows up in a super strict religious sect that forbids moviegoing. After viewing his first film,"First Blood", his new goal in life is to film his own Rambo home movie. Worth trekking down.

#5 - - Where In the World Is Osama Bin Laden? It made me chuckle. Thought-provoking yet aware of its own hamminess.

#6 - - Bigger, Stronger, Faster* - - Great doc about the prevelance of steroids in America. Heard some positive things about the movie, automatically tossed it aside, and finally saw it. I should've taken the initial recommendation.

There's a couple of movies that I disqualified from contention (namely, 4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days and Poultrygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead) because I viewed them last year, but if you catch them playing at your local theater, I assure you: they rule.

Funny Games was brilliant. It's a shot-by-shot remake of the 1997 Austrian film with the same name, just with American actors. I don't know how to start describing this. I don't think I would ever want to watch this again, but everyone should see it once. It's pretty brutal and it seems like the director is punishing the audience for wanting to see this kind of movie in the first place. It does a lot of things that most horror movies don't touch.

This next pick is pure stupidity (it is produced by Happy Madison...ha), but I have watched it several times now. Strange Wilderness is a must see if you are into low brow stuff. It's about this crew of a wildlife show going on a hunt to find bigfoot in order to save their program. The nature clips that they play that are dubbed with their commentary are priceless. The cast includes Steve Zahn, Jonah Hill, and Justin Long.

The Grand is really awesome for what it is. It's a really funny film about a poker championship directed by Zack Penn, though it has a Christopher Guest feel. The actors do a lot of improv and the winner of the tournament was determined by the game that the actors actually played on set. The cast includes David Cross, Ray Romano (he plays this weird husband), and Woody Harrelson.

I really enjoyed Cloverfield though I understand that some people did not enjoy the fact that it looked like it was done on a hand held. For me, it made this crazy monster destroying NYC movie more believable. I thought the monster was really unique too.

I'm not sure if this movie is techincally from 2007 or 2008, but whatev. Doug Benson's Super High Me was pretty funny, even though I don't think they did enough tests on him to come up with conclusive evidence. It's interesting to see someone high for 30 days straight. There are cool cameos by the Comedians of Comedy-type crowd.

I did like Be Kind, Rewind, though I thought I was gonna laugh way more than I did. I thought it was a bit too touching...ha.

I got to see a pre screening of The Rocker, which stars that bald guy with the glasses from The Office in it, and I have to warn everyone that it sucks! I thought it was gonna be Spinal Tap-esque, which you would think from the beginning as everyone is all glam rocked out. There are some cool cameos too (Demetri Martin was my favorite) but the movie just turns into an emo fest (the main character is kicked out of this band and doesn't play drums for 20 years and then joins his nephews lame band). Seriously, there is so much bad music. The best laugh is when the dude is playing his drums naked. lame.

Bleh, I couldn't make it past the first 15 minutes of Be Kind, Rewind.......

I thought it was f'ing horrible.

I don't see movies very often so I can't really point out a great movie from this year.

Iron Man is the shit! Can't wait for The Avengers with Sam Jackson as Nick Fury!
The Orphanage was really cool.
But Hellboy 2 is going to knock the shit out of everything else with the Right Hand of DOOM!

I haven't seen too many movies that came out this year so far. I saw The Strangers and liked it...it's not the best movie I have ever seen but it was worth seeing. Some people were kinda pissed at the end because it made no sense but the thing is, there was a disclaimer at the beginning of the movie that said something like "The events are based on a true story and nobody knows what exactly happened" and with that being said, I can justify how they came up with the last few scenes. BUT the end also was the most brutal along with a scene towards the middle. See it at least once if you haven't!

Rambo, Cloverfield, The Strangers(i thought it ruled, had flaws but kicked ass despite'em), The Happening

i saw The Happening last night and i thought it was awesome. it was one of the weirdest movies i've ever seen at a theater. Not weird in a spooky way, or a mind trip way but it was just such a strange experience. the acting was super akward, on purpose, and the scenes were just surreal. i'm 100% sure that the majority of the world will hate the movie but i thought it was a helluva good time.

Yeah I have heard a few people say it wasn't worth their money but I still want to see it. The only movie I have ever walked out of after it was over and wanted my money back was the 9th gate with Johnny Depp.

I saw The Happening the other night too! I totally agree here...I thought that movie fuckin ruled! Go see it. Now.
