getting the stuff together for my first instrument build...

Post by Barry Clark » Fri August 14th, 2009, 9:42 pm

...from scratch. :D

very pumped. had it drawn up for nearly a year now and the parts ordering should begin next week.

The actual build won't likely begin until this fall.

8 string (not corsed) fretless bass.

if this is something you guys would like to see pictures of as it is made, just say the word and I will post updates as they come.

No.... somewhere between a set neck and a neck through.

Interesting stuff going into it.

Of all the basses I have owned (graphite neck, fretted, fretted, 4 through 7 strings, active and passive, jazz to humbucker pickups, all kinds of stuff including a headless), I have compiled all the things I liked best about each of them and am putting them into one instrument.

I have plans on a guitar, but the fretless bass would be easier for a first crack at it.

What'll be real fun is to see how long it will take me to save up for the Demeter/Bag End rig. :D

I will post pics of me looking lost without the rig for a year or so. haha.

Well... damn.

Not in serious trouble or anything... I am just being cautious... but it looks like the build may be put on hold for a bit.

We had some extra financial wear and tear this month with the newborn getting sick so.... yeah.

No worries. Just have to wait until we get stable again.

Dude -- somehow, I managed to miss that. No one likes a sick infant. (Except for maybe Anton LaVey.) I'm glad to hear that everyone turned out healthy.

Yeah. He came out ok. Money isn't perfect yet but it could always be worse. Just happy things are returning to normal.

Got the 8 tuning keys in.

Man... it really drives it home the size of the neck on this thing when you line them up. Will have to do some changes in my design to compensate.

Cool stuff. Get some pics of the progress.

I've got a project myself - I'm restoring an original NJ Series Ironbird. I'm still in the process of sanding it down, because I haven't had much time to work on it in a while. But it's gonna be badass when it's done.

Here are the tuners!

The strings look to be costing me around $75 for a set. That sorta sucks. I am waiting to see if Dean Markley has a string in the .150-.165 range to add to their 7 string set. If so... it will be BOAT LOADS cheaper.

That was actually one of my first mod things! I had this old NJ series Ironbird. This had to be back in 1991 or something. A buddy of mine at the time, bummed it from me, left it by his bed and, when he woke up, stepped on it and broke the neck. Luckily, I had parts laying about. Sanded it down, stained it. Put a new neck on it. Played like shit. haha.
