Vinyl shopping in the ATL

Post by badcarburetor » Wed August 5th, 2009, 3:43 pm

I know all the usual haunts around Atlanta for record shopping, but I never come across a really kickass metal selection and thus end up buying most of my shit online. I'm just wondering if there is any joint that I've overlooked that carries a stellar collection of metal. I'm interested only in vinyl, not CDs.

I appreciate any suggestions.

I'm sure you know about Criminal Records...but at any rate, they have a metal section. 8)
They had you do a drug test and the forgot to test for drugs???

All new stuff and limited....

Used metal goes rather quickly. It's a "novelty."

There's a store out in East Atlanta called Reactionary Records. I haven't been able to go yet, but I've heard that they have a good selection. Not sure if it's metal though.

The Criminal metal section has very slow turnover, little selection and high prices. Cost isn't a huge issue, but all of those combined makes for rather unfulfilling bin surfing.

Reactionary is a cool place run by very cool dudes, but, again, the metal section isn't all that. But it is a really rad spot and I highly encourage everyone to check it out. It's the kind of personal record shop that makes shopping a lot of fun.

Though I know it's doubtful, I'm still longing for a big ass bin of vinyl with rapid turnover to be stashed somewhere in this city. I miss the days of the punk, metal and import bins in the Northlake Record Bar. Sigh...

I've had a few eureka moments at Wax-N-Facts. Nothing steady though. Their "cheap metal" bin is usually full of Accept, Black 'N Blue, Quiet Riot, etc. but I've come across a couple of awesome finds when someone hard up for cash got rid of some cool vinyl.

I'm not sure how long this is lasting, but CM Distro is having a pretty big vinyl sale right now. Picked up the latest Nachtmystium for $5, Drudkh for $14, Emperor for $10, and a few other great records.

Fantasyland in Buckhead usually has some gems, but you'll pay for 'em.

I think I called them once cause I was looking for something (it was metal ofcourse) and whoever I was on the phone with sounded like they got all offended and hung up. I can't remember which band I was looking for but I remember it not having an offensive name

The guy that runs the place looks like Mike Mills' stuntdouble. He's usually "rocking" The Smiths or Stone Roses and every time I've come to the counter with Scorpions or Accept LPs he makes a face like I just farted on his leg. Then he makes some uncomfortable comment about the cover art and laughs. I don't laugh.

I rocked my old ANAL CUNT tee in there not too long ago and he asked me if that was a real band or a joke band.

"Both, Mike. Both," I said.

"My name's not Mike," he said.
