How is the metal scene in Atlanta?

Post by Deathtotheflesh » Sun August 8th, 2010, 10:07 pm

I am a 34 year old serious drummer that is thinking about moving to Atlanta next year for the metal scene. Could anyone tell me how the scene is there? Are there a lot of serious musicians into metal and hard rock in Atlanta? Are there a good number of clubs/bars for metal bands to play at there?

Also, how is the cost of living in Atlanta? And what are some good neighborhoods to live in in Atlanta?

Thanks all!

Atlanta has a great metal, punk, hardcore, indie, fuck even pop scene. Cost of living is'nt bad and I think there's more jobs then people want to admit. Crime is bad in the downtown area but check out suburbs of Cobb and Douglas county if you want a more laid back country kind of thing.

Hang out here and I think you'll get a good flavor for what is going on here.

As for cost of living, that is going to depend on where you're coming from and where you want to live here. Housing is much more affordable outside of the city center. But "affordable" is relative. If you're coming from Chicago or San Francisco or NYC, it's all affordable.

Where are you moving from? No metal scene where you are?

City living is easy and crime isn't an issue if you use your head. Cheap, fun hoods intown and near the practice spaces and clubs include East Atlanta, Little Five Points, Midtown (plenty of small cheap spots, but it can be pricey if you try for nice and large), Cabbagetown, Reynoldstown, Benteen Park, Grant Park, etc...It's pretty easy to find a 3/2 house with a yard to rent for $1200/month or less. I think that's pretty cheap for city living compared to any other major city. One big advantage to living in the city is that the ATL cops have other shit to do besides hassle you.

Metal gets booked in most of the clubs here nowadays and there's a kickass DIY scene through the 585 Warehouse and a few other spots.

Practice spaces include Thunderbox, Avatar and I'm blanking on the rest. I've been in Thunderbox for years and like it better than any other spot that I've had in the city and I've been in pretty much all of them. But if you rent the right house you can practice there to cut that cost. I just prefer having a dedicated room.

Look on here and Craig's List to see all the bands that are advertising. Check the show listings on here to see how many shows are happening.

Well, you have to admit, at least 3 times a year some tourist or hipster gets the shit shot out of them in East Atlanta. Then the break ins to house and car. Oh yeah, and the cops don't hassle you because they're taking money from drug dealers.

The scene here is prettydamn good imo. There's tons and tons of shows to choose from (more than I can afford so I have to pick and choose). There's alot of active local bands...see the list of local bands thread to get an idea.

As for living, it's pretty affordable. I prefer to live inside 285 and me and my boyfriend just moved into a 3 bedroom house for only $850/ month in a nice neighborhood. We have a front & a back yard and a nice deck too. I live near Chamblee but on the other side of 85.

If you don't want your shit getting broken into, stay away from Little 5, East Atlanta or any place near those areas. There's a good bit of crime in and around Atlanta (like any other bigger city). I lived in those areas and our cars got broken into all the fucking time. So now, I stay about 10-15 minutes from downtown as opposed to living closer. I'd definitely recommend Chamblee, anywhere around Briarcliff Rd, and Doraville if you want to live close to but not inside Atlanta. Cobb, Gwinnet and Douglas county are good too but just farther away. Good luck!
They had you do a drug test and the forgot to test for drugs???

In a city of 5 million plus that stat doesn't really bother me. Not to blame, the victim, but you can avoid a lot of potential crime by thinking before acting. I live in that area and have lived in many dodgy areas of ATL. My house doesn't get broken into because it's well secured and I have a dual canine security system. My cars never get broken into because I park in wise places and never leave anything visible in my car.

It's certainly not everyone's cuppa, but I very much prefer city living to the burbs. I'll trade off keeping my head up for the culture of the city. I just find the burbs to be very depressing, but to each his own; I know many people would not feel comfortable in my area.

I'll also back MF on the Chamblee/Briarcliff/NE ATL area. Being close to Buford Hwy means awesome access to every cuisine known to man. I grew up right where it sounds like she lives now and am currently looking to buy a house in that are. It's not my ideal - I'd rather be between L5P and Midtown - but I need to move closer to help out my Mom.

As for the cops being on the take, I have no idea. I doubt that ATL beat cops are any more or less corrupt than cops in any other area.

*edit* I was thinking about this a little more. Yeah, ATL is a dangerous place, but knowing that is half the battle. I don't think the burbs are *that* much safer, but I know that many do feel that way. It's all about what makes one comfortable.

I live in Tucker and we have our fair share of break-ins here, too. The burbs aren't all that safe. Even places like Roswell have crime. No one place is perfectly safe.

With all this talk of crime, though, we're going to scare our potential new neighbor away. Never mind the crime. The metal scene here is great. Come join us!

Thanks all for the info!

For me i would rather live outside the city and drive in. I have never liked living right in a city but more on the outsides. I used to live like 30 minuets from Minneapolis. The thing that i loved about it is that where i lived you would never know that there was a huge city 30 minuets away unless someone told you. Thats the kind of place that i would like to live with easy access to the city with a drive time of no more then like 30 minuets tops.

As far as crime goes that is a concern for me to be honest. When i was a kid i lived near Cleveland Ohio. Cleveland, to my knowledge, had bad crime. I never liked it there. So i would want to live in an area in or on the outside of the city of Atlanta that was as safe as possible.

What i will be looking to put together if i move there is a Christain metal band. Do you all know if there are any good Christain metal bands from Atlanta? I know that Norma Jean are from Atlanta and they are one of my favorite bands. I also just talked with a Christain metal band through myspace that are an hour or so outside of Atlanta called "To bow or to burn". Nice guys and really killer music.

Also, just to give you all some info of the kinds of stuff that i consider major influences on my musical tastes here are some of the bands that im really into: Zao, Living Sacrifice, Extol, Deftones, Pantera, Converge, Underoath and faith no more (the album that i consider the most influential from faith no more is angel dust). I know that a few of these are not so much metal bands. But they are some of my biggest influences when it comes to the kinds of sounds that im going for with a band. I by no means want to copy these bands though. I want to take their influences and create something original while expanding into new musical territory.

Im into a lot of different kinds of music. But heavy stuff has always been my favorite. As far as metal goes im really into death metal, experimental metal, metalcore, some prog metal, some black metal, some deathcore, some grindcore and other heavy styles that are not so easy to describe. Some of the other heavy bands that im into are: meshuggah, fear factory, mastodon, type o negative, pig destroyer, opeth, soilwork and in flames. Of course there are a ton more, and even though a lot of them get heavy at times they would not be considered metal for the most part (thats why i did not list a lot of them here). But there are also a lot more bands that im into that would be considered some form of metal.

Just thought i would give you all some info about where im coming from.

Moloc, i would be moving from the pan handle area of florida. There is no metal scene where i am. And from what i know there is no long much of a scene in the tampa area as well (which is like 8 hours from me. Atlnata is only 5 hours from where i am).

Yeah I love Buford Highway! Sooo much good food :P

yeah, when our cars got broken into, there wasn't anything valuable except the crappy stereos which probably got pawned for crack. Our house never got broken into though.

About Tucker: my b/f is a cop in that area, that place is going in the shitter. There are some nicer areas but yeah, I don't really recommend it.

I agree with everyone on the cops: they have better shit to do than to be harassing you for a tail light out (unless it's reallllly slow for some reason lol)

As for Christian metal...hmmm Im not sure where you could look for that. There are Christians on this board but I don't know if they're involved in any Christian metal bands. Blaze is Christian but he likes alot of the satanic shit too lol.

I hope you don't put being a Christian band first because it may decrease the pool of bands/ people that you could potentially play with...not necessarily because they hate Christians but because I don't think there's a huge scene fore it. But if you find people, then good for you! I guess it all kinda gets lumped together with satanic/ darker imagery taking precedence lol.

Good luck again and hopefully we'll see you at some shows soon \m/
They had you do a drug test and the forgot to test for drugs???
