Hello, and help.
Hi, I'm visiting Atlanta from 26th-29th November, mainly to see the Falcons on the 28th, but I was hoping to take in a gig if there was one, can't find anything online except Watain, and Crowbar both on the 29th when I fly home.
Are there any metal bars or clubs that people can recommend?
I'm staying in the holiday inn downtown but I dont mind a taxi ride.
Cheers.

Woops, Nyarlathotep. He said November, not October. Shame that...
Are you from the UK? Coming to the see the Falcons? Can we set up an exchange program so that I can go see West Ham United in your country?
Anyway, most folks stay at the Highland Inn. It's a great location - walking distance to several good bars in an intersting area. It's in a cool old building with a nightclub in the bathroom ballroom. You can walk to a lot of cool shit from right there. Free parking too, i'm 99% sure. But if you are staying downtown it's not too bad to get the other "cool" parts of the city: Little Five Points, East Atlanta Village and Midtown. Cabs are pricey, but if you're only here for a minute it won't be too bad.
The two record shops in L5P are about as good as we have, but also worth a five minute drive is Reactionary Records in the East Atlanta Village.
There are no bars that are exclusively "metal bars," but you'd be OK aiming for the Highlander, the EARL, Flat Iron, Drunken Unicorn, El Myr... There are some more, but that should get you started.
Check the "Concerts" section on here for an event calendar. Or Google Creative Loafing Atlanta and you'll find our catch all weekly freebie paper.
Have fun!
PM me if you need any more suggestions for restaurants, bars, etc... I'm happy to help.

badcarburetor, cheers, I'll try check some of that stuff out.
Yea, I'm from the UK, unfortunately I live 300 miles approx. from London, and I'm a Leeds United fan, so I'm afraid there isn't much chance of an exchange lol, unless you want to see the (not so) mighty whites that is.
I travelled over last year, and saw all the sights, unless I missed anything after the aquarium, Coke 'experience' , CNN museum/building?
I've got the whole saturday to kill, so I'll probably head over and check those record shops.
Just realised the Tech - UGA game is on the Saturday but no kick off times, best places to go watch it?
Anyway, thanks for your help!!

The Damned United, eh? I have a soft spot for them as long as they aren't up against my Irons. Congratulations on the promotion!
One of my best friends is moving to Leeds in the not too distant future (house is already purchased), so I actually will likely be making my way there before too long.
College football is something that I probably couldn't know less about, but my recommendation would be to catch it at the Brewhouse in Little 5 Points (L5P) because it's a decent atmosphere and you'll get a better pint there than any shitjack sports bar downtown. Hit L5P, do some record shopping, hit a couple bars and watch the game there.
One of ATL's decent "cultural" experiences is the High Museum. It gets wicked crowded on the weekends, but if you avoid the feature exhibit (currently late period Dali) you can have a nice visit and see some qulity work without elbowing small children and old people.
ATL is a driving city for the most part, so I'm trying to keep in range of place to get to by MARTA (public transport) or cheap enough cabs.
Holler if you want to meet up, have a pint and explain the game of American football.

The Damned United indeed, it's not looking so rosy at the moment, but still early days.
Funny you should say that because West Ham are a team I've got alot of time for, been to Upton Park a few times and always found it a good atmosphere.
Leeds is a great city, always loads of good bands on, though the local stuff is hit and miss.
Might check the High Museum out, see how I feel, how much time do you think you need to do it justice?
Yea that'd be cool, cheers man, I'll be around on here I reckon, sort something closer the time.

I think you'd be suprised how much I do know, been watching for a few years, just watching the continued implosion of the Chargers as we speak.Holler if you want to meet up, have a pint and explain the game of American football.

Give your self at least an hour and a half to breeze through. Three hours or so to really take a close look and read. There's a great Titian exhibit that just opened. It's a bit sparse, but some cool works nonetheless. The massive Dali show will still be up then too (if you're into that) and two smaller floors full of photos by Peter Sekar and Henri Cartier-Bresson. The permanent collection (the mod-con stuff particularly) is definitey worth a look...Claes Oldenburg, Ellsworth Kelly, Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, etc. Plenty of typical Warhol, Chuck Close, etc. too.UKMetalhead wrote:Might check the High Museum out, see how I feel, how much time do you think you need to do it justice?
The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University has a pretty interesting exhibit up right now of Islamic caligraphy from the late 1600's to the present. And if you really dig art museums and you get really bored, check out the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, too. They've got a pretty decent all Georgia painting show up until January.

Yeah, it started as a hobby. I'm actually a museum preparator by trade, which inevitably has taken some of the intrigue out of it, but the upside is that I'm able to keep abreast of current happenings with relative ease. It stays pretty interesting most of the time. Atlanta has a lot to offer.badcarburetor wrote:Interesting. Very cool. I'm a librarian and am interested in possibly moving into curation at some time in the future. I'd like to hear more about what you do. I'm sure it won't be long before we run into each other.MS_39455 wrote:Yeah, it started as a hobby. i have been wanting to check the dali exhibit out for some time now. this will sound completely retarded but back in the days, me and some friends would have some drinks and smoke some pot and over analyze that guy's paintings for hours sometimes. i feel so dumb looking back on it now but ill always appreciate dali's art.

You're supposed to do acid and stare at that shit.slut rag wrote:i have been wanting to check the dali exhibit out for some time now. this will sound completely retarded but back in the days, me and some friends would have some drinks and smoke some pot and over analyze that guy's paintings for hours sometimes. i feel so dumb looking back on it now but ill always appreciate dali's art.
This exhibit is HUGE. Definitely go on a weekday to be able to get any perspective and personal time with the pieces. I went to a members only pre-opening showing because it was supposed to not be crowded. Was it, fuck? It was miserable and just pissed me off that much more at how pretentious Dali could get. Not a fair assessment of his later period work to be sure, but I definitely have enjoyed other exhibits of his work more.

UKMetalhead:
As a football fan, I'll tell you, college football is more entertaining and passionate. If you can get a ticket to the UGA/Ga Tech game, it will be an experience. There will be about 20,000 more people at that game than the Falcons game. Plus, Athens is a great party town with ~70 bars in less than 1 square mile.
