Neofolk

Post by Brian » Fri December 10th, 2010, 1:24 pm

I've started listening to Death in June and Current 93 recently. Enjoyable tunes. My knowledge of the genre is limited to those two artists.

Someone educate me, hook me up with recommendations, etc.

Rome (my second favorite band ever after Blind Guardian)
Backworld
Gae Bolg and the Church of Fand
Ianva
In Gowan Ring
Naevus
Spiritual Front (their Armageddon Gigolo album for something fun and poppy)
Neun Welten
:Of the Wand and the Moon:
Sol Invictus
Sonne Hagal
Tenhi
Strength Through Joy
Waldteufel
Werkraum

the sister genre of martial industrial is also very worth looking into. Rome's first few albums are of this style

Rome is a good band. I'm not familiar with term neofolk. I'm too lazy to google. One of you care to explain?

I guess a simple way to describe it would be folk-inspired music played by industrial musicians.

Which era of Current 93 are you listening to (and liking)? They've had vast changes over the years. The early stuff, like Dog's Blood Rising, isn't anything I would recommend, as it's more industrial/tape loop/psychotic screaming -- which has its place, admittedly, but is nothing compared to albums like Thunder Perfect Mind and even the newest one, Baalstorm Sing Omega, which are much more mellow and evocative. Dare I say transcendent? Yes, yes, I dare, as I am a music snob. I also heartily second Sol Invictus. The album Thrones is brilliant. I haven't explored this music as much as I should, but I can definitely say there's nothing else like it.

Specifically for Current 93, I also recommend Of Ruine or Some Blazing Starre (similar to TPM), All the Pretty Little Horses (hallucinatory nursery rhymes), the live album Hitler as Kalki, and the completely wacked out Birth Canal Blues. There's a song on BCB that is almost the neofolk equivalent of black metal. The collection SixSixSix:SickSickSick is also a good introduction, as it wanders through their various styles -- plus it has "Lucifer Over London," which is one of my fave Current 93 songs. Rotting Christ covered it on Khronos. (It was amazing.) And David Tibet, the guy who pretty much -is- Current 93, is one of the most bizarre people ever. In a good way.

Now I need to get on all those other bands recommended above.
