There is a disproportionate fear of constipation, I've found, in the metal community.

haha wow, I know people that like the more extreme sides of metal and are in the top of their classes, but if they did a study at least in high schools, metal heads being brainier would fucking drop.
I was in the Advance Placement Program, or what ever schools try to call their own program to "challenge" students for their self benefit, and i was the only one that liked metal. All the other people that liked it were in the lowest of the class difficulties, eventually drop out, died to overdose, party so much they don't achieve anything academically, or are dead to the world due to drugs. Not trying to show off or anything because that stupid, but this is just wrong.

So metal heads being brainier, no, at least academically however in other areas probably.

Just from observations and conversations I've noticed that it definitely goes either way. I've come across plenty of idiots who have amounted to nothing and I've come across just the opposite.

As for the metalheads I went to school with, most if them were definitely smarter academically. One thing I have learned though is that you need more than just book smarts to get by in life but book smarts definitely help (I'm sure y'all knew that 8) )
They had you do a drug test and the forgot to test for drugs???

You have to keep in mind though, there's a difference between being intelligent and making use of it. You could be a genius but flunk out of school.

+1

As for metalheads being 'brainier,' it also depends on what bands/style we're talking about.
--Is the average intelligence level at (say) a Dream Theater show higher than at (say) a Lamb of God show?
--Yeah, maybe. That 'intelligence,' and $1.40, will buy you a cup of coffee at the Waffle House.

In the end, it's what you make of it.

True, but this is not the case for 99% of flunk outs. Not every drop out is an Oliver Heaviside.

Flunking out was more of an extreme example. What I meant was that too often someone's grades don't match their level of intellect.

Honestly, I think it is silly to say _____ genre is smarter than _____.

Like everyone has been saying it just depends on the person/band. Just because your lyrics are based on your own cynicism doesn't mean you understand the world better than other sub-cultures. I've met plenty of metal fans that were very well-educated/experienced. Sometimes it is the way you were raised or you've just been around the block enough times to know better. On the other hand I've met plenty of metal fans that talked shit just to talk shit because they feel their silly opinion matters the most when it is just them trying to be the most br00t4l/klvt/metal as fuck.

I've met drop-outs and punks that knew what they were talking more than metal fans. vica versa

Semi-related

An academic look at black metal.

Stuff like this reinforces my love-hate relationship with academia. I love to learn and study. Dissecting and writing about shit that I dig - and this about under researched - can be really fun, but is it really ultimately pointless and just kinda plain dumb?

He excelled at math and science, though he often got only mediocre grades in other classes
