Streaming music services

Post by Knucklehead » Thu March 14th, 2013, 4:36 pm

I've had Rhapsody for quite awhile now, but I'm growing increasingly irritated by it. There is no Ozzy-era Sabbath, there's no pre-Black Album Metallica, there's no Led Zeppelin, there's no Metal Blade era Slayer and, perhaps most importantly, Bolt Thrower and Entombed have disappeared.

Are any of you using a streaming service? If so, which one?

In case anyone was wondering, Spotify wins. It doesn't have Meddle (unlike Rhapsody), but it does have the early Metallica, Ozzy-era Sabbath, Hell Awaits, The IVth Crusade (as well as a bunch of other Bolt Thrower), and The Left Hand Path.

It even has Avsky, which Rhapsody does not. Maybe I'll finally listen to some of that junk.

I've been using the free version of Spotify.

I've found a couple other free services that let you stream music on demand on the desktop and on the iOS:

grooveshark.com and ex.fm

I don't know if they have as many tracks available for streaming as Spotify does (15,000,000), but I've discovered some very obscure stuff on them like Dutch kids' music and such.

When I start paying for a service again, I'm torn between Spotify and MOG. I know MOG streams at 320kps; I don't know about Spotify. I know that MOG is going to become Daisy later this year--headed up by Dr. Dre and Trent Resnor It's supposed to be the online equivalent of walking through a record shop and talking to the owner. I'll believe that when I experience it.

I also heard that Apple is going to start their own music streaming service. I don't know how much money they could make from it though.

I love making playlists though and Spotify makes it real easy to do. There's a Firefox plug-in for Spotify Search. You just highlight what you want to search for and right-click and it launches Spotify to the page with the artist or song you searched for.

Speaking of playlists:
