I tend to go by what was considered metal in the 80's as being definitive. I see that others tend to do the same in regards to the time in which they came to love metal music. I have always thought the genres within metal helped to clarify things a bit without accusing too many bands of not being metal. While I myself consider Twisted Sister to be very metal, others with heavier tastes may not. I don't consider bands like Hatebreed, Bury Your Dead, or 18 Visions to be metal(I think of them more like hardore bands). It's all relative, it's not a science.

Hatebreed is a hardcore band, as I see it.Zane wrote:I tend to go by what was considered metal in the 80's as being definitive. Simple structure, two-step parts, etc.
Bury Your Dead I throw under metalcore.
& 18 Visions may as well be a rock band these days.
I miss the old 18 Visions...
most of the metal core bands seem more metal to me because of their rythyms, what most of you say is more metal seems more speed metal or death or black. i listen to the underlying beats, newer stuff reminds me more of the old metalica and megadeath stuff i grew up on. not so straight foward.
hope you all fucking rot
Yeah If by metal you mean guys that tease there hair, and wear nut choking leather pants that make your voice so high that you sound like a prepubescent teen then your right. Your a fucking idiot that has to have an image to look cool because you have no personality or any other social skills. Like I said before I stopped trying to be cool back in high school I could careless of what people think of me so rock on with your skin tight pants and ball less sack cool guy.TheKshatriya wrote:That sir, is why you are not metal.Death2all wrote:I don't know however about the heavy metal lifestyle though I think its more of an image than anything else.

Yes. Because Neal is a total power-metal dude.Death2all wrote:Yeah If by metal you mean guys that tease there hair, and wear nut choking leather pants that make your voice so high that you sound like a prepubescent teen then your right. Guys that tease their hair? What is this 1985?
Even Dickinson has short hair.

I tend to disagree with this assertion, though you are not the only one who feels that way. Metal has always had an image. Death metal bands had the image of "not having an image", and they all dressed very similiar. Black metal bands , glam metal, speed metal, all had corrsponding images that were similiar in fashion. Metal is about an image with music. I agree that music should be a first consideration, but let's face it, we all have at one time or another, purchased an album based on it's cover art, or an interview we read, a picture of the band. I'm glad for this because that's how I got into metal way back in '83, the whole "road Warrior" trend. It's no crime to have both style and substance.
