Not sure if I'm saying this the right way, but to me it's almost as if the prior albums are these great & amazing death metal works, and Once Was Not stands on it's own as a singular work of musical madness/brilliance. Hopefully, I just made some sort of sense.
That's pretty much exactly how I see it. It's like an undefinable entity of music in and of itself, a glitch in the matrix. It's heavy and brutal as fuck, but it just doesn't seem like it can be called death metal like None So Vile and Blasphemy Made Flesh did. It's also wildly experimental/technical like Whisper Supremacy and And Then You'll Beg were, but never gets bogged down in over-technicality and showing off just for the sake of showing off.

It's a perfect balance between the two Cryptopsy eras, in my opinion.

yeah there bassist gave me a copy. it rules. but from every opinion on Once Was Not people either seem to love it or find it inadequate to Cryptopsys standards. Another thing that sticks out to me about Once Was Not is that the production is weak. But I still need to give it a few more listens.

The production is definitely geared toward putting the drumming way up in the mix, but wouldn't you want the best part of your band spotlighted in the production too? Especially if the best part of your band is pretty much the best at what he does in the world?

It's cool though that we're all arguing about how whether it's a good or great album vs. arguing about whether it sucks or not. Even bad reviews I've read about it acknowledge the fact that it's an amazing album, though they do seem to be stretching awfully hard to find something wrong with it.

Definately man, these types of interesting musical discussions are in part why I joined up, so it's good. Good point about good/great vs bad/awful. I think live some of the less 'brutal' parts are destined to be amplified and heavier.

once was not is is defeintly a nice mix of the two cryptopsy eras but i dont think is comparible to either one and yes it lacks some of those "brutal parts" that stand out. i cant wait to hear them play the new songs live though i think they will sound bad as shit live

Next month...hopefully it won't get pushed back. It's supposed to have a bunch of drum solos and exercises/techniques for the extreme metal drummer, which would really be the first of its kind. Should be amazing
