I was down at the RenFaire this past Sunday, and at around 2pm my day was basically ruined when I got a text that Dio had actually passed that morning -- this was after the rumour had spread like wildfire that he'd passed the night before...helluva rollercoaster of a day....
I was quietly telling fellow metalheads working down at Faire, since most of my friends who work there can't even use cellphones during the day.
The new band there this year, the bagpipe-and-drum band Tartanic, does some rock covers, like AC/DC, so I figured I'd tell Adrian from the band.
He looked at me in shock, and then grabbed a drumstick and pounded on his drum loudly -- and believe me, you can hear those drums a half-mile away normally. EVERYONE within 100 feet looked over.
"Your attention please!" he yelled. "One of the finest voices EVER has been silenced. Ronnie James Dio passed from this life this morning! Rest in peace!"
There were some puzzled faces...but about two-thirds of the people there reacted with gasps or sad sighs. It was a sad, and yet uplifting, moment.

I wouldn't normally consider Turner Field to be all that metal a place....
So imagine my surprise when we realized that pitcher Kris Medlen's "walk-on" song, the song picked by each player to be played over the PA when their at-bat is announced, was Dio's "Holy Diver." Hearing it in front of 28,000 people, most of whom aren't metalheads, was pretty nifty.
(Chipper Jones' song has been Ozzy's "Crazy Train" for years, but hearing Dio meant more, so soon after his demise....)
Relief pitcher Matt Wagner's self-picked song was Metallica's "Enter Sandman," which is both cool ("yay, Metallica!") and also uncool ("....but it's THAT damned song again!").

The Braves had another reliever about 5 years back who also used Enter Sandman. Wish I could remember his name. He was supposed to be kind of a big deal and we paid him accordingly, but he took off like a lead balloon.
Also, I went to opening day and their was another Brave using an Ozzy track besides Chipper, who's been using that track for as long as I can remember. Wish I could remember who it was, but it was opening day and their were a few beers consumed.
Agreed, though, nothing compares to someone putting up a Dio track in respect.

So he is living here now? Also just saw that Primate has a date at Star Bar end of June. I've never seen anything really heavy playing there before.Brian wrote:on my walk from work to the car today, saw some dude chilling outside the GA Tech student center wearing a Brutal Truth hat. turned out to be their singer.
Tech isn't a very metal place, usually.
