agreed. and the term "black metal" is thrown around in absurd ways these days. the simplistic, minimalistic ideals that BM was is so over annalized now and sometimes unrecognizable, iam not familiar with these "liturgy" fellows, sure there music sounds decent and all, but just the sheer amount of bullshit that he speaks, needs to just call his music pink metal, or maybe even blue, he probably attends church. we are people and its in our nature to change, we create music, so inevitably music will change and musical ideas will be bent all out of whack. this was a sure thing to happen, sissys calling there cat a dog...

I got kicked out of the earl once for heckling the shit out of gringo star. Some dude from the band (I'm guessing the lead singer) finally had enough of my shit and jumped off the stage after one of their songs. He did this really gay thing where he tried to "get in my face"...but all he could manage to stutter was "you wanna talk shit about my band?" over and over again. I responded with "yes, you're band sucks donkey dicks" then pushed him and he fell over (he's rail thin and this was probably the manliest thing he's ever done, trust me im not that tough). I felt a little bad for picking on a frail kid who probably had a mild case of autism, but what's done is done. At this point two huge black bouncers came and pulled me outta there faster than I could say "what the fuck".

Anyway, as much as that band sucked, at least they were trying to play the music they like. Sure, they were an embarrassing failure, but that's not the point. They keep true to themselves. What you see is what you get: 4 or so dudes trying to play indie rock, sounding like the 3rd place event at the local middle school talent show (considering you live in a predominantly white, upper-middle class area). It is what it is. Now stop and think "what if these guys went through a black metal phase? I wonder what that would be like?" The answer to that question is Liturgy. It would be difficult to give them any credibility or recognition in the same way that it's difficult to say to a preteen goth/emo type, "oh, so THIS is who you really are. I accept the true you, as this will never change."

So why did you feel the need to pick a fight with him and start shit? I'm sure the fans and people that were there to see them were just really enjoying that.

What if one of their fans came to a metal show we were all at and was ruining the show for all of us?

I think if they can draw that kind of reaction from the band then the incident deserves to happen.

I agree with that, but in order to get said Upper East Siders to pay attention it had to be written in that semi academic tone.
It does beg the question, why is he trying to educate the Upper East Side on Black Metal? Put another way, I don't know that this writing is much worse that what is on the web. (ANUS, anyone?) I just understand why it is in the New Yorker.
It's just spectacle. NYer readership will do what it does with most artforms, and observe quietly from afar. Sasha FJones submits his take in a creole these folks understand, and that means they understand BM now. No need to get ones hands dirty.

In the end, who gives a shit. It's not even a viable fucking genre anymore. It's come to connote everything and nothing. Minimal, post, avant, etc etc etc shoegaze etc...

and a-fuckin'-men.
I really find it hard to enjoy anything i do lately because i just hate hipsters so much, and they're everywhere.. and it fills me with such a hate that it actually just ends up making me feel physically sick. The worst part about it is the ones that sneak by the front line and everyone is "o lol sup bro" well fuck that. I dont and never will tolerate a faggot mustache or a god damned fix-gear bike and plaid shirt at a show i'm at, i don't care who you are or what you do or how many dicks you sucked on the way from Mary's to 529 (at least 4), don't ever even so much as try to talk to me. Worse than scum, worse than fucking nazis, worse than anything i can even think of right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhwPI3Jgglg That video is what hipsters are. They come out of their shitty fucking lairs looking all retarded, open their pussies, and suck whatever life and meaning they can out of anything worthwhile and leave a barren, empty casing behind. I'm buying a gun.

How do individuals in a crowd really ruin a show for people? There is no greater indication that one is not really there to hear music if other attendees standing in various parts of the same room "ruin" your evening.

I normally just let negative shit slide, but these are legitimately good questions!

So one of my friends, we'll call him Ben since that's what his name is, will occasionally buy 1-2 extra tickets to shows he's going to. He usually asks me or my best friend to come along. The music is rarely to my taste, and sometimes it feels like goading to get a concert buddy, but Ben really is a nice guy and is probably just trying to be generous/a good friend. He's paid for me to see Deerhunter, Grizzly Bear, Small Black, A Place To Bury Strangers, etc. Deerhunter was actually a great show- they have this phrase in one of their songs that intentionally sounds like the tomahawk chop, and whenever they're in Atlanta they extend it and the whole crowd goes fuckin apeshit. Anyway I be's a ramblin...

So it's another one of those free concert nights with Ben, and this time we're seeing Washed Out, with Gringo Starr opening. Washed Out sounds like My Bloody Valentine on a jamaican holiday. Thats alright with me (i fuckin love my bloody valentine) and I agree to go. We always pregame really hard, but this time I was totally kerblaster-fucked. At that stage, I have no tolerance for anything that doesn't sound like Demoncy, Beherit, Darkthrone, etc. Or at least some killer death metal. The whole way up I'm blasting Vesaeleth, so of course, by the time we arrive and Gringo Starr is playing, I'm like "what the fuck is this horseshit" except im not thinking it, im saying it, loudly. Between every song break I loudly proclaimed that I could see the cum evaporating from their faces. I didn't start the fight per se, but I definitely instigated it. To be honest, I really didnt want everyone to get a fair dose of gringo starr. It's like being exposed to radiation poison, I thought I was acting like a lead shield. I'm not proud of it, but I'm not sorry for it either.

Their fans one would never come to a death/black/thrash show. Even if they did it would be pointless. I'm not super good friends with most of the great local metal bands, though I can say I've at least made most of their acquaintance and i doubt a piss drunk hipster heckler would be anything more than a very funny joke to them. Also, what Holiday Rambler said. Complete fucking rules btw.

We're nearing the 20th anniversary of A Blaze in the Northern Sky, so it is only natural that the genre tag has expanded to, perhaps, the point of meaninglessness. Is that not inevitable in the evolution of art? On the other hand, there are still some bands making some great Black Metal.

On a related note, I ran across a clip from "Until the Light Takes Us", where Fenriz talks about how he and Varg had diverged. His point was that Varg's focus became political and Fenriz' remained musical. Anyway, it struck me how far we are now removed from the vitality of that early scene. I once read someone quip somewhere on an online forum that no one without life experience can make black metal. The more I think about it, it seems to me that no one over 25 can do it legitimately.

But perhaps I need to hobble over to the Hall of Kings on this one.

i mean that's cool, if you want to try to call me out or something, i understand you're in wizard smoke and you are used to dealing almost exclusively with hipsters so you prpbably don't really understand where i'm coming from. I had a fucking blast at our show at jacks but there were still the hipsters who turned out to crowd the place, break the window to the outside, and generally bring down levels of fun all around. Not being repulsed by hipsters is no greater indication that you don't really care about the existence of a metal scene imo.

Well, I was watching 1349 (?) play in Hell when some skins were slamming in the pit. One of them got thrown out, for some reason and the other randomly slugged the guy standing next to me in the face. It sort of put a damper on the whole thing.
