If I'd seen this post earlier, I would've tossed in my 2 cents -- not that I have any musical training, but I'm always up for talking about music, especially metal, in terms a bit loftier than "it rocks."
I agree, though, that metal isn't as ripe for analysis as classical (etc). Aside from Emperor's nearness to actual symphonic music, and Gorguts' insane brilliance, there aren't too many bands whose music really merits "analysis" on the level of, say, Bach.
I remember reading an interview with Luc Lemay, in which he said he'd written some sort of concerto or chamber piece for one of his music classes, and he'd used Gorguts riffs (or "themes," I guess) throughout. I'd like to hear that, needless to say.
Oh, and that Lamentations DVD rocks.
