Non-metal stuff....sheesh, where to begin?

Lately I've been listening to Dead Can Dance a lot. I flew up to see 'em in New York City at Radio City Music Hall and picked up one of the live releases from that tour (sadly, the RCMH show wasn't recorded) as well as the European live tour release. I've got another order into DCDDisks/The Show now for the "Selections From North America" 2-CD set from the tour. They are absofuckinglutely brilliant.

More unabashed non-metalness: for about 3 hours last night I was pounding away on a djembe (big African hand-drum) for the usual after-the-RennFaire drum-circle and dance at La Fiesta restaurant in Union City. After the kitchen closes, we kinda......take the place over. :D There are a lot of longhaired metalheads working at the Faire...please don't tell the owner.

Tears For Fears....heck yeah. In fact, I recently re-ordered a copy of Songs From the Big Chair because when I went to look for my copy, it wasn't in my CD cases.

I like a lot of other weird stuff like Ozric Tentacles, older Hawkwind, various movie soundtracks, and a smattering of goth and gothabilly bands (Faith and the Muse, Cruxshadows, The Last Dance, Voltaire, Ghoultown, Bella Morte, Green Goblyn Project, etc.)

Like a lot of metalheads (not to mention musicians) I listen to large amounts of Classical, Romantic, Baroque, etc--Schubert and Shostakovich being two of my favorites (Shostakovich's string quartets remind me of latter-day Emperor). Actually, though, my single favorite piece of music ever written is Beethoven's Fifth (cliched as it's been through the ages). Schubert's Unfinished Symphony is right behind it--then starts the metal.

That totally weird, mostly British genre that has been variously labeled "apocalyptic folk" and "neo-folk" and god knows what else, is very cool as well. Current 93, Elijah's Mantle, Sol Invictus, difficult as they are to find, are makers of some original music. Possibly demented, but very original.

I used to be into the whole indie rock thing--Guided By Voices, Morphine, Liz Phair, Ween--but that's sort of tapered off. And I had, somewhat coinciding, an electronica phase, a gothic phase, and an industrial phase, all of which are thankfully over. Though I sort of mined the best out of them and still occasionally listen to stuff like Circle of Dust and Bauhaus and Future Sound of London's earlier stuff.

And late at night, there's an insane fire-and-brimstone preacher on AM 1530 who makes for a singular listening experience. He was speaking in tongues about a week ago and I nearly soiled myself. Good times.

And we can't forget Mortiis. Well, his first few albums. He rules. Fake nose and all.

Oh, and I saw Sixteen Horsepower open for Morphine; they were cool.

I've not heard much Tom Waits, but "What's He Building In There?" is fucking great. (I guess that's the title.) I just saw him in a Bukowski documentary, incidentally.

Anyway, yeah, there's more than metal. But it's the only genre I can't live without. Strange how that works.

Man ive never heard of any of the bands youve mentioned paul (wrekage-paul) they sound interesting. Where can I hear them, maybe myspace links? Let us/me know.

Im glad someone else listens Tears for Fears theres something about 80's rock/alternative stuff that impresses the hell out of me. Its just great music the songs are written very well and musicianship is actually really progressive but you dont always notice at first because its so tastefull(Peter Gabriel)

I deffinittley cant live without Metal either I wasnt always in love with metal but theres so many great metal bands and music I love hearing new stuff people are doing everything now its cool to hear whats next.

Hell yeah!!!!!
Ozric Tentacles is the shit! Saw them live over a year ago! Been listening to them and Hawkwind since I was 18. Huge Hawkwind fan! I have so much Hawkwind cds and vinyl. Fuck yeah! Saw Nik Turner and then a few months later saw Hawkwind with the founding member Dave Brock the night of the OK City bombing on schrooms....sorry got a little excited there! Also for space rock, Helios Creed, Chrome, Farflung, Pressurehed.....

Also Captain Beefheart, Can, Cactus, Captain Beyond, Bauhaus, Joy Division, Weatherreport, Tubular Bells, Bardo Pond, Nektar, Gong, Roland Kirk, Tortoise, Mortiis-Stargate, and Crypt of the Wizard were excellent atmospheric soundscapes. Plus Dead Kennedys, Killing Joke, Skinny Puppy, OLD, E.A.R.(experimental audio research), and I admit I like Muse.

If you liked Circle of Dust, you might like Celldweller, which is Klayton Scott's current project. Their self-titled debut CD has become one of my favorite CDs of all time. Excellent live show, too, although I've only seen them once, at the Masquerade, at a little headlining gig that drew about 40 people. (They'd draw a lot better now!)
And we can't forget Mortiis. Well, his first few albums. He rules. Fake nose and all.
Nice guy, too. I saw his first-ever US show at the Masquerade when my friends in Godhead were, like Mortiis, opening for Christian Death. We had to share the 'visitors' dressing room, which was....weird. I walked in and saw this really young-looking guy, just arrived off the road, wearing a cool shirt and fairly tight leather pants. "Are you with Mortiis?" Faint smile. "I am Mortiis."

post, Ozric Tentacles should be fairly accessible on the Net if you look for mp3's, but I can't find a current website for them. They used to have a great one, but they blew their bandwidth and that was that. I can recommend the CDs Jurassic Shift, Erpland, Strangeitude and Live Underslunky without hesitation....although almost any CD they've done since the old cassette-first releases is excellent. Snapper Records has recently reissued quite a few of their CDs in a handy 2-in-1 package format. The CD that they thank me in, Waterfall Cities, is pretty good, too. :) They don't fit into a genre. "Instrumental space-rock with great grooves, excellent synth and guitars," I suppose.

As for the other bands....hmmmm. Dead Can Dance are at www.deadcandance.com, although the page doesn't display right for me. They are world-music, with lots of influences including Celtic, Middle-Eastern, traditional, etc. One of the most revered bands in the genre. Their show at Radio City was breathtaking.

Faith and the Muse are one of the world's legendary goth bands, ranking just behind Bauhaus, Joy Division etc. in terms of influence. I basically booked their last show here in Atlanta, at Dragon*Con, and they were superb. I think a lot of folks there (and there were 1,500 or so people in the room) were really surprised; most of them were there for the Cruxshadows, who are a more modern/electronica goth band. I'd really love to see them again.

DZC, cool that you've seen Ozrics. I missed their last show in Athens and it really killed me...and it would have if I'd gone, since I was working on no sleep and had just flown back to GA from TX that very day, and was in severe toothache pain. I did see them in NYC and Charlotte on their last tour, with Jon fronting the band for the last time. :(

Yep Secret Chiefs 3 are awesome I really like Book M, the newest album was cool but I didnt enjoy the grincore stuff. I really like bands that are experimental but I like consistency not just a whole bunch of bizarre but impressive parts thrown together.(abrubtly ending and starting each other) But they are awesome.

Ill have to check out all those bands you recomended necrodin they sound intersting. I really like techno/ambient sample type stuff, in the future id like to get a program set so I can do my own.
