Lot of good comments in this thread......have to agree with those who say that the Atlanta scene isn't quite cohesive: there are a lot of decent-to-great local bands, there are a lot of metalheads, there are some good venues....but all of it doesn't really come together too often.
I think back to "ye olde days" when the Wreck Room was the de-facto gathering spot for local metal (and also punk and ska).....back in the days when you could see seven bands in one evening on both of the Wreck Room's stages (remember the 'beach' stage in back?), plus you'd also have a lot of bands with practice-spaces there hanging out, 'cause they got in free.... And if the Wreck Room's fare that night was sub-par, there was always the Somber Reptile two blocks north of it.
As for current band recommendations, I think Brian's and MS's lists are great. There are some good up-and-coming bands also who AFAIK are still getting their live presence worked out, like ArkTide (progressive metal).

Give me like 10 bands you think are good to exceptional...
Here are some of the local bands I really dig. A lot of these have already been mentioned. A couple of them are signed, but still don't get a lot of love from the "scene." A couple others are pretty new but show a lot of promise.
Anger Within
Apocalyptic Visions
Axial Discorrelation
the Bone Church
Daath
Dead Rites
Doomsayer
From Exile
Gnostic
Legion X
Light Pupil Dilate
Malefic
Organ
S.M.I.
Sybaritic
Withered
Xeroderma
I don't totally consider them local. Gnostic however are both local and awesome.also, don't forget Athiest!
This is actually a really good point. The Loaf is only as good as the paid show ads. The smaller clubs will actually list the local bands so that's a good thing I guess. There are some sites and forums out there which are good as well but I don't know how much attention they get from people who aren't in the bands. I'm not bitching though. As far as my band goes I can only blame myself for our local profile and try to think of ways to boost it.Totally clueless as to what's what today. Had no idea there were that many bands going at it. How the fuck would you know? It's not like Creative Loafing is going to run a feature on them... Local zines? Have no idea.

Well, if local bands send me promos, I'll write 'em up on The Left Hand Path. Gets good to great traffic. Easy promotion - whether I like your band or not.
That said, I'm going to try to pitch something to CL about the "scene" here no matter how fragmentary it may be.
Anyone interested in web coverage, PM me.

Some others that I dig include:
Death of Kings
Sons of Tonthiath (that spelling is all wrong, but it's something like that look for them on top friends of bands like Withered)
Armazilla
I started going to shows in the early-mid 80s and have never stopped. In my experience Atlanta was never a great metal town. Sure, the big shows did fine, but just like with straight edge and hardcore, Atlanta's local scenes were never all that big. I sure don't remember those local shows with a thousand people there, but maybe I somehow missed it.

They were something to see! The WreckRoom would have people standing on tables and down the back hallways due to lack of room. Sometimes even sitting on the edge of the stage.badcarburetor wrote:Some others that I dig include:

Armazilla is a cool band. Seen them a couple of times. A good friend of mine is the drummer.
like to add:
Royal Thunder - not exactly metal but amaaaaaazing female fronted 3 piece rock with heavy psych/doom influences...love this band
and my band Spewtilator - weed obsessed thrash/grind
i def agree that we've got a few great metal bands here in atlanta...just not the interest/"scene" to back them up unfortunately... though i will say it seems things are picking up if the Cannabis Corpse show was any indication.
I just want to now where all these fuckers are when theres not some huge headliner...
