lol no actually. Just about everyone speaks English (not the residents necessarily). I just ate lunch at some Chinese place on Buford Highway a few hours ago and everyone there spoke English. It may not be perfect but they can take your order just fine. I've never had a serious problem communicating to someone. If all else fails, just point to what you want on the menu!Generubin wrote:I only know the English language. Would I be royally fucked if I tried to live around Buford Hwy?

^^^ it was New Paradise $ across the street from the CDC.
Some other great places to eat on Buford Highway: Korean- Cho Sun Ok $$$ (next to the large package store near Shooters Ally), Vietnamese- Pho Doi Loi $ (in Little Saigon shopping center, next to Buford Hwy Mini Storage), Cajun style- The Crawfish Shack $$ (near CDC in shopping center surrounded by woods), Mexican- El Potro $ (near Brookhaven area & Briarwood Rd), Chinese- Canton House $$$ (near corner of Beverly
Hills Dr and next to Dynasty Nails),
near Buford Hwy: Chinese- Fortune Cookie $$ (Lohmann's Plaza on N Druid & Briarcliff), Mexican- El Torero $$ (same as Fortune Cookie), American- The 57 $$$ and The Downwind $$ which were already discussed, American BBQ- Pig n Chick $$ (corner of P'tree Industrial & Clairmont), Ethiopian- $$$ damn the name is slipping me but it's in the Target shopping center on N Druid Hills. Italian-American- Il Bacio $$ (Sydney Marcus Blvd after Buford Hwy forks on L with Home Depot), Psuedo-Asian- Tin Drum $ (also in Home
Depot shopping center), southern style- Donnies Country Cookin $ (mexican Kroger...Clairmont & Buford Hwy, it's on the Clairmont side), French- Violette $$$$ (Clairmont near Century Center). Unless you want fast food, there's nothing noteworthy on Shallowford or Chamblee Tucker (near Buford Hwy that is)
$: less than $10/ person
$$: $10- $20/ person
$$$: $20-$30/ person
$$$$: $30+ per person
These are based on one meal (lunch or dinner) + nonalcoholic drink. Obviously, appetizers and alcohol will increase what you spend.
Any other area you folks want to know about? Obviously, I love all kinds of food and I've probably eaten there at least once! I eat out alot and should weigh about 300 lbs because of it
(I workout to prevent that!)

yeah my metabolism slowed down a bit but since I started working out 2 years ago, it went back up, and now I can eat and eatGenerubin wrote:Metalfreak wrote: Obviously, I love all kinds of food I eat out alot and should weigh about 300 lbs because of it(I workout to prevent that!)

damn right, except even though I do work out I have a very high metabolism

@Holiday Rambler- I've never been to Desta...I drive by it all the time since I live nearby. I'm gonna have to check it out for sure!
It was awesome. I'd put it as my number one chinese restaurant on buford highway. That said, it is Szechwan (from a certain province in china where they like their food SPICY!, most chinese is cantonese) so you gotta like spicy and unique dishes. The prices are a little above the buford highway average but it's a nice place inside and portions are good.Metalfreak wrote:How was Gu's Bistro? Was it good? Where is it so I can eat there lol
If you want recs on what to get, here's everything we've had so far (been there twice so far).
- Chengdu dumplings: Really flavorful dumplings appetizer in a sort of soup
- Snow pea leaves with garlic: Good though I like mine a little bit firmer (ok, laugh). If you haven't tried snow pea leaves before you are missing out
- Tea smoked duck (there are a few different varieties, can't remember the exact name but it wasn't stir fried) --- Really really good, and a flavor I have never tried before in duck.
- Cumin lamb: Very good, hopefully you like cumin. It seemed sort of dry-stir fried to me so I liked the texture a lot but if you aren't used to that style you may just think the meat tastes dry.
- Spicy fried fish (not the exact name)- Battered fried fillets of very flavorful fish... highly recommended
- Spicy string beans: Good but I wouldn't get it again. Only get if you are a big fan of string beans
- Beef dan dan noodles (appetizer): Extremely good. Like tasty china's except a little less spicy
- BEST FISH I HAVE EVER EATEN. I'm almost positive sure this dish is the first one in the fish section. It was just chunks of the most flavorful fish you can imagine
- Some chicken dish. It was just OK- I would have liked it a lot more if I had used a fork because it was small pieces of chicken with veggies and stuff all chopped up.. hard to eat with chopsticks.
In the future I am going to try the walnut shrimp (I hear it tastes like crack), dry pot, bak choy w/ mushrooms, ...and probably that fish dish again because it was seriously that good. Overall this place feels like a less spicy Tasty China.
Anyways, it's located in the shopping center behind the chick-fil-a like 1 min off 285 going north. 5750 Buford Hwy, Doraville, GA 30340

I second El Potro. That junk is delicious and all of those dudes watch the telenovelas religiously so they can fill you in if you're confused. Once there was some really crucial moment in one of them and the waiter carrying my food froze in the aisle, along with all of the other waiters in the place, riveted to the TV until the big secret was revealed. You could have heard a pin drop. When the commercial came on everyone resumed activity and I finally got my food.Metalfreak wrote:Mexican- El Potro $ (near Brookhaven area & Briarwood Rd)
I will add Little Szechuan because the food is outstanding and if you chat up Kong he will give you free stuff. We usually get either free bamboo shoots (if they're in season) or free asparagus.

This is the best thread ever on here. Someone split and rename so that it's easy to find in the future.
I could talk about Buford Hwy food all day and am super stoked that I'll be living right there again within a month.
Crawfish Shack alone is worthy of it's own thread AND THEY DELIVER!
What I want to learn more about is Ethiopian food. I've never had it and I'm very intrigued. Right there at Clairmont and Briarcliff (what used to be called the Williamsburg Shopping Center) has three spots in it, including Desta.
Tell me what to eat, where to eat it and how to eat it. Thanks.

For starters...you eat it with your hands. They do have utensils but you gotta ask for 'em. Fuck 'em, you don't need any.badcarburetor wrote:What I want to learn more about is Ethiopian food. They bring out a basket of this stuff called injera which is basically a thin, spongy bread rolled up. Similar to a pancake or a crepe. Then they bring out your actual meal (anything from beef, lamb, chicken, fish, all sorts of veggies, chickpeas, lentils, collards, or a combination) and you rip off pieces of the injera and grab bits of the meat/other dishes. Similar to eating naan with Indian food...except the shit is EXCEPTIONALLY filling. It's ridiculous. A $9 entree will last you two good meals, at least it does for me.
I dig it, they're all really friendly at Desta and all the dishes are tasty as hell. Try it out!

Anybody know what happened to 88 Tofu House? We drove by one day and it was closed. That was my regular birthday dinner. (Perhaps if we had visited there more than once a year it wouldn't be closed.badcarburetor wrote:This is the best thread ever on here. It's fun to eat "traditionally" too. You all sit on the floor on pillows and they place the meal in the middle of the circle on a wicker pedestal. I wish i remembered the name of the Ethiopian places I've been.Holiday Rambler wrote:For starters...you eat it with your hands. They do have utensils but you gotta ask for 'em. It only closed in the last month or two from what I heard. I never made it there, but always wanted to.Diana wrote:Anybody know what happened to 88 Tofu House? We drove by one day and it was closed.
