what's funny about the last few darkthrone recs is they sound EXACTLY like all the goddamn "old school thrash revival" promos i'm inundated with. nothing differentiates it other than the fact it's played by two once titans of scandinavian black metal.

If you are getting hit with a bunch of modern DT clone bands you need to hit me up with the names - and/or said promos that are clogging up your house. I can't get enough of that style.

3/4s of that stuff is coming from sentinel steel and HRR. bands are overwhelmingly canadian. i write up most of it for the mag. that i can't recall a SINGLE BAND NAME tells you how much i enjoyed listening to it 10 or more x before writing a review that tells you nothing about the band or its music.

Ho ho these riffs. Ho ho this album. My will to wait for the physical copy withered once I knew it was out there.

I was grimly expecting this to reek of "music made by music critics," the sounds of boxes being ticked off and nostalgia getting the better of judgment, but whatever my complaints about Darkthrone's didacticism of the last ... I dunno, decade or so, this thing is just so full of amazing ideas played expertly that it transcends the whole notion of "Fenriz paying tribute to Fenriz's favorite 80s metal." I was three songs into it before I even had the wherewithal to realize the production is fucking tremendous. The first riff is a jawdropper and it doesn't quit. Kinda agog here.

It's still black metal just by way of 1983, I like the entire album , on the drive back from savannah this weekend we played name the band being worshipped and came up with...Venom, Merciful Fate, Bathory, Celtic Frost, Iron Maiden, and Sodom, which are all fine bands to blend together in my book

I dig it and I'm sure it will continue to grow on me. My favorite Darkthrone is the crusty/D-beat era, but this is some fine stuff, too.

They should probably just stick with worshiping Darkthrone.
