Great points all around.

Lighting is pretty important. Surely there's SOMEONE in this town that has a lighting rig and does shows. There's gotta be a lighting guy with decent gear and is relatively knowledgeable. If this thing is pulled off, it would be pretty wicked to see it turn into an annual event.

As far as filming, Kelly, e-mail Justin at studio@haberslam.com, and see if this is something he'd be interested in doing. He's got an incredible AVID system, as well as some really nice camera gear. You can also get at that ass at: www.myspace.com/haberslam. He's been talking about working with someone on a multiple camera system, plus he's pretty badass at live sound recording. Add him to your friends list and peep his vids, as they're always a treat. I'm very keen on his editing style. I don't know if he'd charge to film this thing, but I think the bands could contribute a nominal fee to cover fuel costs, and additional equipment costs. I don't know, but it's an idea...Plus I can very much vouch for his film professionalism, as it's what he does for a living. We'd need more than one hand on a camera to make this thing turn out spectacular.

As far as a venue, Mike's idea is a good one, if we could set up a grill, that would be the damned diggitty deal. A venue that would be cool enough to let us run a "fest" like this would be a damned fine one indeed.

Does anyone know anything about Earthlink Live/The Loft/Vinyl? Lenny's *should* have good sound with all the gear they've got, so a nincompoop must've been drooling over the deck. I would suggest the DarkSide but it's too small, and in the middle of nowhere.

The proper venue will be a tough call on this one...

I was really impressed with Massacre of the Umbilical Cord and they're from SC.
That way we can have more talent to choose from and we could draw fans of metal from Alabama, SC, NC, etc.
Yep, I second that. THere are some kickass bands from Louisiana and all around the GUlf Coast - and if we did this as a Hurricane Relief thing, people might be apt to support it. I've been passing around a bulletin on Myspace which this guy from NOLA gave me about a hurricane relief event which I might go to on January 13. But since we're talking about this thing now, what about we talk about its being some kind of charity? What if we got sponsorship, and actually had a budget.... hmmm...

I was talking about ME videotaping. Hmph.

But yeah, I'll check it out. I just don't have the kind of equipment that can stand up to a bigshot rig like he seems to have.

Lenny's would be cool, however it's 21+ which could prohibit a lot of people from going.

Breakers would be good for something like this (lots of space, serves alcohol/food), but it's not all ages, either. They've also had things like this before (chaosfest, utter destruction) and I don't think the turnouts were that great. The amount of people in bands outnumbered the people who paid to get in. Everybody seems to hate driving there, too.

Succesfully putting on something like this, to the caliber that some of you guys are talking, with metal bands, is pretty difficult. A show with just local bands probably isn't going to draw over 50 paying heads at max. It would definitley need a solid headliner, which would require some financial backing. I'm talking about a seriously solid headliner, like maybe on a Mastodon caliber...a band that would require a pretty hefty guarantee.

I think it would be cool to find someone that has a large plot of land in the middle of nowhere and get some of the bigger bands in the area (Zoroaster, Withered, Daath etc) and maybe a couple of bands from surrounding states to play and just basically have a party. Maybe rent a decent PA if nobody can provide one, get a few kegs and keep the costs pretty low. No fancy shmancy stuff. Bands jammin' on the back porch with some bbq cookin and alcohol flowing.

Kelly, you silly goose, I was referring you to him so BOTH of you could videotape. It's hard to get multiple angles with one camera.

:o/

Chilly Willy, I am digging your style. Short of getting a wicked headliner, it could be tricky bringing all the boys to the yard without a serious "milkshake". I don't see Mastodon being game for a local event, either, so moving it to Podunksville would be nice.

I would like to believe that if enough of the bands from town signed on, there could be a decent draw. We've got 8 months to promote the shit out of this thing...

Well, yeah, but only if he trusts me to use one of his camcorders... like I say, my equipment can't stand up to that kind of rig. I'd love to get my hands on an avid system too.... **SALIVATES**

I think we need to calm down on the talk about getting every band in town to sign on. I'm with Matt in that I don't think we should just book them indiscriminately. On the other hand I don't want this to be a big political thing either. I say we have a nominating committee that consists of some peoples who have no stake in it, those who are in the know about music but not someone who'd be in the running to perform. Perhaps the radio people could do that. I just wouldn't want it to become a "I like these guys so they're in" -- or "Those guys are assholes, even tho their music rules" kind of thing. I would like to see bands who are really good and represent all aspects of the Atlanta metal scene, not just the tastes of one or two people. BUt I'd also hate to just throw it open and then watch as all the metalcore starts pouring into the venue... :0

As for bands, I have several in mind that are diverse in style, draw decent, and are cool folks. I'd be happy to talk in private with some WREKage folks and get a feel for who we want to play without hurting feelings or opening any floodgates to shitty music.
Fuck it, Dude, let's go bowling.

Seconded.

Also, is Lenny's or some of these places always 21+?
i'm not sure how the liquor licenses work, but perhaps there could be an exception.

Whatever comes of this be sure to sign us up. We'll probably unveil "Dragonslayer", since we probably won't be doing the full-length this summer.

How many bands do you all think we can squeeze into a day? I was going to suggest splitting two days into a, as Matt would put it, "Melo-dick" Day and are more gore-grind, kvlt, death black, blastbeat fest. I think there are plenty of bands to fill both those bills. Especially considering that no one will turn out befor 3:oo pm anyway. What time did Meehan's start this year? There were a fuck ton of bands on that night, and that didn't even scratch the surface of all the shit here in town.

I don't know if Will saw any of Swayze's Fest '05, but that business was pretty packed especially considering how many joke/bullshit bands played that thing, and I don't think there were ever more than 7 bands a night.

We actually played Swayzesfest that year. I remember there was a decent turnout when we played.

I think two days is a bit overkill.

Alex had chocolate sauce in his fucking microphone from "Sleazoid Mafia 666's" performance the night before.

I was probably way too drunk to remember you guys playing. I remember seeing your happy ass wearing a git-fiddle AND a bass at the same time, playing both from behind a curtain. I don't know whether that was avant-garde or ghetto fabulous, but it was right tight nonetheless.

The turnout for Swayze's Fest was silly good. I was actually surprised.

I know who needs to play.

Atheist.

They're playing Baltimore this Saturday and they're going to be touring more. Kelly Shafer has been practicing up in Atlanta because Steve Flynn lives here and still plays with Gnostic as well.

Bump!

Mostly because this needs to happen. Anybody got any ideas for a venue yet?

I have asked Kelly Schaefer about this already, but the guarantee they need to play here is more than any venue here could come up with.
