same here. I do like keyboards but not when they overpower everything else.Knucklehead wrote:Agreed on the first part, still deliberating on the second.VOEGTLIN wrote:I have a very limited KEYBOARDS policy and it's not extended to Emperor.

I agree but personally I don't get the whole "Keyboards don't have a place in metal". I think it is pretty closed minded to say that metal can't have an instrument that isn't manly enough or what ever the thing is with keyboards.

Agreed as well. When done right, unorthodox instruments can sound really fuckin cool in metal. Since it's metal, I just don't like it when they overpower everything else...then sometimes it's not metal anymore!Generubin wrote:Metalfreak wrote:same here. A. It's hard not to look like a dork. B. The sound of the instrument just isn't aggressive. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that agression is the main emotional component of metal.
The only tasteful example of keyboards that I can think of is "Dunkelheit." And maybe "Cut Their Grain and Place Fire Therein" by Weakling. You know, track 1.

While I love keyboards, even when they're persistent and overbearing (e.g.: Arcturus, Emperor, Vesania, and probably a dozen other bands I love), I think a minimalistic use of keys in just the right place can be pretty persuasive to those who see them as "non-metal."
One of my favorite songs of all time, "Meuterei" by Nagelfar, is probably the best example of this. Those little bursts from 2:18 - 2:45 (and repeated later) take this song into the stratosphere.
And I'll take any opportunity to proselytize Nagelfar.

I think that it can sound right if used properly, but that doesn't mean I like bands that have a keyboard that is overpowering for the band. If a metal band is able to keep the aggresive side while still having a keyboard and the band sounds amazing with the keyboard; I see no problem with having it.
The only metal bands I can't stand that have a keyboard is when the whole band is nothing more than fancy guitar work and drumming following a Mario sound track. Although I do agree it is very hard not to look like a dork on a keyboard. As long as they aren't headbanging like a sped who is overwhelmed by the buttons on keyboard then I guess it is okay with me.
It is all in personal taste

Well, my job is done, then, haha. It really is one of the best black metal albums ever.Diana wrote:Sir, this is right up my alley. I have just ordered Virus West. About a year ago, some dude on metal archives translated the lyrics for me, and they're fucking amazing:
thunderous giant in the bed of time
are you my grave or my incarnated savior?
we are the virus on board of tyranny
mutiny
on a far meadow the choir of dead seamen trails away
like quaking thunder in a howling night
we are the nightmare in the sleep of hypocrisy
mutiny
we have awoken
(from deep sleep on the millennium sea)
cut! cut! construct the downfall!
the night that can mean the end has come
sing! sing! the ocean is haunted
we're singing the songs about the end of the world
steer! steer! let's go to battle!
to defeat the gods tonight!
cut! sing! haunted by the downfall
in songs of death, in a choir
end of the world - awoken to a life of killing
ocean of murder - we are making sacrifices for your floods tonight
human - tyrant - flood - Ragnarok
towards midnight a bang sounds in the far west
shudder, fear, prayers on deck
we're causing panic while remaining unseen
mutiny
lamb of peace and beast on an epic journey
the wave breaker carries partially unexpected hostility
on an evil course, in power and glory, in eternity
over
we are the obstacle, the conspiracy
we're impaling each and every man to the mast
we have awoken
(from deep sleep of the millennium sea)
end of the world
the song of tyranny's death divides the night...
in silent fear the rain falls
all good games are over
we're raging as avengers against the party of torturers
mutiny
corpses decorate tyranny
soon they are bait for the thunderous giants
we are the bad omen for millennium
three
we are the obstacle, the conspiracy
we are impaling lamb and man to the mast
towards dawn the horizon spreads his plumage
giant wings swallow the light
he who knows death has far sight
and laughs when truth welcomes lies
sword next to sword, we're going into battle
and we're riding the fire we're made of
human - tyrant - flood - Ragnarok

Oh, if you guys didn't go looking for live footage of Emperor, here's the absolutely thunderous video of "Curse You All Men" from that Live Inferno DVD:

I agree that music should not be close minded, but I'm a pretty singular minded metal head and typiclly I don't care for keys. A band with keys gets way more prejudice than a non-key band. I don't give a fuck for any non-conventional instruments. Damn your violins or oboe or whatever...I'll take a power trio over an 8 man jerk off fest 9 times out of 9.
