how long is too long?

I think it depends entirely on the situation.
Locals are rarely given more than 20 minutes when opening for Nationals at the Masquerade these days (which for us means playing 3 songs).
If it is an all local show with only 3 or 4 bands on the bill, I think 35-45 minutes is fine. If you're in one of the early slots and there are only 6 people there to see you, then 20 minutes is more than enough. If however you're in one of the later slots and you brought a decent crowd, then by all means give your folks their money's worth.
