re: Opeth

the first time I listened to it I wasn't impressed at all. Mike does use his clean voice a lot more often, and I think while listening I was trying to force it up to the standards of their old albums instead of judging it on its own merit. Each song seems to build up to a climax then end rather than the repeated peaks and valleys in old Opeth songs.

Right around the 3rd time through it I started picking up on subtle things like little keyboard runs, a new riff here and there, and by then it really started growing on me. I absolutely love it now. I hear bits and pieces of every album dating all the way back to Morningrise in each song, although this album is probably the least heavy of all their "metal" albums. Take for instance the third track - it opens with a Bleak-style Arabian-type riff then flows right into a riff that sounds like the "Run away, run away, run awaaaaaaay" part in "Demon of the Fall" then goes back to Blackwater Park/Still Life-era sound with Damnation keyboards thrown in for good measure . "Reverie/Harlequin Forest" is probably my early favorite - that little 1 minute instrumental gives way to a simple riff that they build on the whole song up to the awesome finish.

The reason it doesn't sound like classic Opeth is these songs are new classics in the making.

Me either. I saw a thread about them on another mesage board a few days ago and while I was attempting to clean my closet I came across "Slip"...so I couldn't help but stick it in...and then I put the CD in my cd player and listened to it.

And that picture is SEEEXXXAY! I wish that was us.

Depends on what NOFX it is. The "Ribbed" album is a personal favorite of mine...possibly rivaled by "Liberal Animation" if I could find my copy somewhere.
