I think its a mix of everything. Bush taking away almost half of their funding, appointing some friend of his as a disaster evacuation planner (idont know what its called) who had no experience what so ever, just because he was an old friend he got the job. But I also think it was part of the local governments fault for not doing more of what they should be doing. And some of the people that could actually get out but didnt. I dont think Bush understands that some people just cant get up and leave and go to their summer homes. But im sure that there are people that could but didnt.

Bottom line is :
The federal government is not our saviour.
We have to expect our more of our state government. The feds are not responsible for the levees breaking. Louisiana's government is.

Actually, we've both been volunteering at the Red Cross shelter on campus, and working face to face with survivors.

There's a trip being planned for Winter Break, which I will more than likely be going on.

If anyone's been a news jockey - sitting at home and talking shit about things they know nothing about - you definitely fit the description.

Ok. Levees are maintained by the Army Corps of engineers. And you say Bush is the head of the military. Guess what? That's military and a federal agency. His responsibility. Pwn.
Also, terrible analogy there. I'm sure you'd want help from the federal government if some awful natural disaster happened here. Traffic is not a natural disaster. Dept. of Homeland Security is a federal agency that is in place to take care of these sorts of catastrophes. They have not done that.
This shows we are not safe at all from another terrorist attack. The federal government fucked up. Plain and simple.
yea i might not be and expert on levee maintenance. but i do know its not just riding down there with a cement truck and patchin the holes. that shit would easily take a decade to dam the water higher, cut out the old levee's and rebuild them. dont give me shit about the government showing up to help with a natural disaster. i went down and helped with the clean up of andrew, i also went down for ivan. ive seen it. and im sure its nothing compared to what they are going through in N.O. there is really nothin the government can do. especially if the "stupid black cajuns" are shooting and stopping people from helping. throwing money at this situation is worthless. money is just paper. you can put every dollar in the u.s. down there and it wont do a bit of fuckin good. they need people down there to rebuild... not army down there pushing everyone around. why dont you suck up your high and mighty fuckin leftist opinion and drive out there and help. nah thats crazy. its much easier to sit here on your fuckin computer and blame shit on the president. as if he could have done anything in time. they only thing that could have been done was evacuation. and they didnt pull it off now did they?

Second I did help out at the Red Cross and i'm helping out again tomorrow night.
And if you could read I already said what Bush could've done:
Fund the levees properly.
Sent the National Guard earlier.
Not been on vacation dicking around until Wednesday.
I hate all politicians. Not just Bush.

THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS TAKES CARE OF THE LEVEES. JUST LIKE LAKE LANIER. THEY ARE A FEDERAL AGENCY.

If that's the case then the rest of the country can expect nothing from the state of Louisiana. International trade ports, oil refineries, etc would all be in the greasy hands of those cajun politicians and the rest of the country would be on their own and out of luck. Georgia would be back to picking cotten but that's what those dumb rednecks get for living there.

Also, think of the amount of redundant effort that would be in place with each smaller governing body having to create their own agencies. Agencies that would not be needed but on rare occasions so they would be slower to advance, less capable of executing, more expensive to operate and more likely to be cut completely (many cities can't afford adequate police/fire protection).

Oh and on another note about the leeves you act like these leeves where built during the bush administration which is not the case. The leeves are older than anyone on this forum. Why not blame every president that did nothing about them not just bush you bunch of assholes. Holly I thought you was done with this argument why chime in now. I think by the time you make down there for winter break most of the cleaning will be done. The next big thing to watch for is the riots that are going to be taking place in Kosovo here in the near future.

It's really not that hard to see that this whole situation, while unavoidable, certainly could have been a lot less catastrophic with proper federal attention to evacuation procedures and flood prevention.

Ultimately it's a case of the government playing the high odds hoping the worst wouldn't ever happen and losing.

Well in that case who the hell wants the federal government involved more in our lives. Fuck that why not lay down and let them have there way with every aspect of our lives is that what you people are trying to say.

Because none of the other presidents cut the funding for their maintenance to fund a war. They were strengthened as recently as 1995 after a different flood hit down there, but by 2003 all the funding for keeping them at full strength was gone, which is a big reason why most of New Orleans is now gone.

Sounds like they did a half ass job why not do it right the first time or was the funding cut then too.
