did you expect any different?
I was honestly hoping it would be decent. Last album was kinda meh, but I LOVED the Gathering. Musically the new one is okay, but the vocal arrangements and lyrics are pretty fucking lame. ...at least, that's the case for the first half of the album which is all I've managed to get through so far.
I thought Formation of Damnation was awesome! So I was pretty disappointed with the new one. The vocals on the Powerslave cover are weird too. Feels like Chuck's holding back.
I totally agree about Formation. That album brought it in style. The only new song that I've heard so far is True American Hate. It seems like new Exodus with their tough guy singer instead of Testament. I'm not a fan of when Chuck Billy leans towards death metal style vocals like he did on Demonic and this reminds me a little of that. Hopefully it will grow on me. I want to like it.
I guess Formation was okay, aside from the cringe-inducing 9/11 track.

I'd also like to like this one, but the first half had my finger itching to hit the track skip button more than once.
Haha! I felt the exact same way. Most of the tracks I would start thinking, "Ok, I get the picture" and half the time just skip. But man, for me Formation had track after track of good stuff! So I have the exact opposite feeling towards Formation than I do for Dark Roots.

This will likely be skipped over, but it's been a slow day at work, so...

Killing Joke - What's THIS for? and S/T (both) and Love Like Blood

Ride – Best of thang

Chrome Waves – Chrome Waves
Sure sounds a lot like…

Nachtmystium – Silencing Machine
This band pretty much always hits it out of park for me. Whether it’s straight up black metal or weird dance music, I love it all.

Cops and Robbers – Face to Face With Hate
This is some very good throwback hardcore.

Grand Magus – The Hunt
Metal. Pure, straight, unadulterated metal. There’s a lot to be said for that.

Mick Ronson – Heaven and Hull
Take a Long Line is like a lost Status Quo jam. Top notch tuneage. It’s the kind of song that automatically leaps into my top 100 tunes of all time part way through the first verse. I’ve always loved this guy’s style and class. It’s a shame he was lost too soon. I think Randy Rhoads was probably a big fan. Which reminds me I’ve been spinning a lot of Status Quo recently on the turntable.

Poison Idea – Darby Crash Rides Again
This is the sound of insanity in the same way Black Flag was. To this day not much can touch this for intensity.

Toxic Holocaust – An Overdose of Death
This was tied with the last Kreator record for album of the year for me in 2008. It’s still perfect in my book. Not sure why so many people hate on him/them. Because he’s a “poserâ€Â￾ or some equally weighty shit? Yeah, Conjure and Conquer was a bit of let down, but dude has still done some seriously good shit in his time.

Tenement – The Blind Wink
Not sure where I heard about this or why. Was it on here? Kind of an odd mix of 90s angst mixed with noise. Sometimes it works really well. Other times…not so much.

Lily Allen – Alright, Still
It had been a while since I spun this. I still find it charming.

The Streets – Mix of his first three albums

Speedwolf – Ride with Death
Pretty much a perfect album start to finish. Makes me feel like I’d waiting decades for this mix of Motorhead and Venom, much like hearing Midnight for the first time. This would be up there with Kvelertak for the best album of 2011.

Scissor Sisters – Magic Hour
This band can do no wrong in my book.

Candlemass – Epicus Doomicus Metallicus and some of the new album.
Never listened to these guys much. Some I dig and some bores me.

Murder City Devils - In Name and Blood and R.I.P.
I never paid any attention to these guys instead giving my attention to Murder City Wrecks. A few nights ago I watched Edge of Quarrel and was very surprised as how good the flick was (I had very, very low expectations, mind you) and how much I liked this band. Boy was I missing out. This is very good even if dude’s vocals lean to the monotonous.

Rambo – Bring it!
GRRRRRR….

Vegan Reich – Jihad and Vanguard
Still heavier’n fuck. I pretty much love any band with a strong agenda. Just makes it more fun when the music sounds like a soundtrack to some kind of impending revolution.

Raid – Hands of Animals
Most laughable title. Ever.

Discharger – The Sword of Our Ancestors
Proper oi that stands up to repeated listens. Been a long time since I’ve typed up anything like that.

Katatonia – Brave Murder Day
I never gave these guys much thought because their name sounds dumb. I like this better than other stuff I heard by them. It’s OK.

The Plasmatics – Coup de Grace, New Hope for the Wretched (Best album cover ever? It’s up there for sure.) and the godlike Beyond the Valley of 1984.
This is ground zero for the all the metalpunk of today. Fucking brilliant! Everytime I listen to this I get transported back to when music was legitimately fucking scary. Loved getting to Reform School Girls at the Plaza a week or so back.

Knapsack – Silver Sweepstakes
Run of the mill baggy shorts and white shirt 90s era punk. Some of this stuff still has a certain charm when song hooks are strong.

Impiety – Ravage and Conquer

All Out War Meh, don’t even recall what albums

Bulldoze
File with All Out War

Nuclear Death – Somthing about Insects or some shit?
File with Bulldoze

American Nightmare
A bunch of shit by these guys that was all laid back, acoustic shit. Really good. I guess that I had only heard their hardcore in the past?

GBH – Punk Junkies
So jazzed to have a new album by these guys to wear out. Thanks Diana and Stew!

Big Eyes – Back From the Moon
Top notch power pop. Can’t believe I slept on this for so long.

Motorhead – First three or so.
‘Nuff said.

Vio-Lence – Eternal Nightmare
Never gets old, even after a couple plus decades.

Iron Reagan – demo tape thing.
Meh. Trying to hard maybe?

Bane – It All Comes Down to This
Yeah, I love that edge. Goes with the whole soundtrack/mission aspect, I suppose.

Turbonegro – Sexual Harassment
At first listen this better than anything they’ve done in a while, fake Hank and all.

Wolvhammer – The Obsidian Plains
Even if I prefer the earlier stuff, this band still has the best name ever. Ever.

Goatwhore - Blood for the Master
This is pretty fucking rocking. That's a good thing.

Ancient VVisdom – A Godlike Inferno
More of the BOC (for lack of a better term) styled Satan rock. Dig it on first spin.

Lita Ford – Livin’ Like a Runaway
Still impressed that this album doesn’t suck more.

Black Sabbath – Sabotage
I’ve probably listened to this album more consistently in my life than just about any other. It’s perfection start to finish.

Blizaro – City of the Living Nightmare

Cancer Bats – Dead Set on Living (should be “Set on Deadliftingâ€Â￾)
I don’t know why I like this album so much, but for some reason it just clicked with me when other stuff like this doesn’t.

Hatebreed and Pantera
Both go really well with Cancer Bats. I know that’s not a compliment to any of those bands, but they get the job done.

Gehenna - Murder

Acid Witch - Stoned
Fuckin’ A this album is a cracker. I never get bored of it. It’s comfort metal.

Deathevokation – The Chalice of Ages
This has a similar effect on me as Acid Witch, even if the styles are different. Both are straight forward and well executed. I also dig how these guys were on the cutting edge of giving away/pay what you want with their music.

The (International) Noise Conspiracy – The Cross of My Calling
Not my favorite album by them, but that’s cool. I haven’t listened to it so many times that I’ve memorized every corner of it…yet.

The Flaming Sideburns – Save Rock N’ Roll

Carole King – Tapestry
Smackwater Jack is a pretty sick boogie number.

King Diamond – Abigail
Man, I really hope he tours soon/again!

Coven
Both the old Satanic band and the 80s joke band.

Virus
Both the thrash band and the punk band with a “Theâ€Â￾ at the start of their name. I think I have their albums all mixed up on my iPhone. Works great that way. I don’t know who is who and I don’t care. I also listened to some heavy dance shit called Virus Factory that was pretty badass as well.

CR@SS various mix along with some CONFLICT.

Bestia Arcana - To Anabainon Ek Tes Abyssu (another "how the fuck did I not know about this" band...been a lot of those recently)
Yearning - Merging Into Landscapes
Vintersorg - Orkan
Nile - At the Gate of Sethu

My mom played this a lot when I was very young. It's one of those few albums that we each have that are emblematic of our early childhood.

The other two, for me, are Through the Past Darkly by the Stones and the first Boston album.

I posted something about them a little while back . Blind Wink is just OK in my book, Napalm Dream and the split with Culo are my favorite of their jams for sure so check those.

Based on this, I checked out Napalm Dream this morning. There's definitely way less noise on it. I'm not sure if I prefer that or not. It's all OK. I was never big on that 90s big shorts sound back when, but in small doses it holds a certain nostalgic enjoyment for me now. I think I'll probably spin Jawbreaker in the future, though.

@stew how is that Degial record?

@badcarburator what's the American Nightmare acoustic stuff called? I have never heard of this....might be a different band with the same name.

American Nightmare - 7 Song Demo and Revenge is Living (2006) are both on Spotify. The shit is really good. From what little I can find on AllMusic and Wikipedia, it seems to be the same band. But AN did change their name to Give Up the Ghost because of another band claiming the same name. I'm pretty sure AN just did some reunion shows under the AN name a couple months back. So, in short, results are inconclusive and without lurking the B9 board I'm unlikely to find an answer immediately.
