If for some reason anyone needs more homogenized black/death metal in the style of Dissection with some other melodic Scandinavianisms of the 90s thrown in (eg: old Dimmu, Old Man's Child, Thy Serpent), this Hyperion is really good. There's enough ebb and flow to make it entertaining. To me, anyway.

I was listening to Savatage's rerelease of Sirens/The Dungeons are Calling the other day during a trip to Winder (because my life is just that exciting) so in light of that here's a recent clip of Jon Oliva yelling "City Beneath the Surface" with Obituary.

I'm much looking forward to the new Destroyer666, Vektor, and Sorcier des Glaces. And this new EP with Eric Cutler of Autopsy and Sean McGrath of Impaled, dba Necrosic.

edit: I streamed that new Abbath recently and, well, while it's better than All Shall Fall, it still bums me out that we've gone from Pure Holocaust, At the Heart of Winter, and Sons of Northern Darkness, masterpieces all, to this. I like that it's a little more rockin' than I was expecting, but I thought that's what the band I was for.

The new Borknagar is similarly tepid: amazing vocals but diluted by a lack of memorable riffs.

I enjoyed the Hyperion album Seraphical Euphony

I've lately been listening to the newer Psycroptic album. I still just can't dig the vocals even though over time he has gotten better. I have alot of respect for the brothers of this band and their composition of the songs.

Been an Aeon fan ever since they came out and I'm waiting for them to come out with another album. I prefer these guys over cannibal corpse.

Just been listening to some Abbath...I am not much of a BM guy to begin with but I enjoyed this new stuff. Perhaps because it isn't too Black Metal-y if you know what I mean?

I am not too familiar with Immortal stuff so maybe their music has always been like this for all I know.

All this as I was thinking of buying a ticket for the Abbath/HoF concert.

Yep, this new stuff is straight rock'n'roll. And word on the street is that you should get your ticket early -- folks gaped in horror when I said I didn't have mine yet. So I bought it, and now I look forward to the inevitable visa issues.

Currently listening to Taake - Hordalands Doedskvad on loop. Damn this album is good.

I've been introduced to 2 new bands

Necros Christos - Doom of the Occult (atmospheric Black metal)

&

Winter of Sin - Violence Reigns (Members from God Dethroned Black/Death)

Lonesome Crow
Animal Magnetism
Blackout
Love At First Sting
