I heard Zoroaster on WESUCKNOW 9-6-1 and the DJ gave some info about them and seemed excited to be playing them, and then they played Green Day. Goddamn I hate commercial radio, but it was nice to hear something quality and local, if only for a few minutes.

If there was actually someone smart at P9-6-1 or at Clear Channel, they'd do a 'heavier-rock/metal' show during late-nights, but -- happily for WREKage, LFR and WNGT and our 'niche' listenership -- there ain't.

99X sponsored a Newcastle show at 10High awhile back with Zoroaster. That's probably where that comes from. I guess it's their way of giving the "nod" to metal, and Zoroaster is the kind of metal that can translate much more easily into the 99x demographic's ears than most other types of metal.

Yeah, I heard an advertisement on 99x for that show (I went to the show, too) and they said "For fans of Black Sabbath and Mastodon!". That was probably the smallest crowd I've seen them play for, too...but it was cool...however a wannabe funk band played after them and the 99x guys left after Zoroaster (I wanted to piss on the 99x van parked outside the club after the show).

That reminds me -- the night of the Cattle Decap/Daath/Goatwhore show at the Masquerade, I got busted for passing out flyers to the Zoroaster/Apocalyptic Visions show, because the bitches at Masquerade are actually under the delusion that Habitual Hardcore would take customers away from them on a night when there's no metal playing there. But before they chased me off there was a 99x thing going on with that stupid guitar VW bug, where you plug the guitar into the sound system... kind of like a weekend warrior for rock star wanna-bes heh.

Anway the dude that was holding that promotional thing came over and looked at my flyers and he was like, "Oh, yeah, Zoroaster!" so he got one of them -- I bet he would never have looked at it if Sam hadn't put their logo on that flyer. He mentioned the Newcastle show (which had not yet happened at the time) so apparently he'd heard them already.

I'd say putting them in league with Mastodon is a brilliant idea too, as most people know the name even if they don't listen to metal at all. Come to think of it, Zoroaster is a pretty badass name itself. I'm excited for them. They really deserve success.

Yeah the Masquerade's policy is they don't allow promotion of non-Masquerade shows at the venue. Outside the venue on the sidewalk I think they don't care.

Someone told me once that after a show, there was a cop car parked outside and the cop was inside. Someone was passing out Sevendust stickers and by the time everyone left, the cop car was covered in the stickers. I wish I could have seen that.

That promotion was on all VWs, not just the Beetle.
& it's not the greatest guitar, but your assumption about the people who drive VWs is pretty ridiculous.

VW doesn't need promotions like that to draw people into buying their cars - everyone will always drive Jettas, performance freaks will always drive GTIs, and girls and middle aged nostalgics will always drive Beetles.
VW mainly does promotions like that for fun.

I don't recall making any assumptions about anything other than that promotion thing. What I said applies to that particular promotion. I don't understand how what I said could be interpreted to mean that I was assuming that about every VW driver.

And I have to respectfully disagree with you about the promotion being just for fun. I used to work in a market research firm in Chicago... VW was actually one of their clients and I remember something about that when they started up that new ad campaign back in the late 90s. Trust me, those kind of campaigns are not created in a vacuum. They have spent craploads of money and done craploads of research on the 99x demographic; they're the prime group for just about any industry because they're the ones spending most of the money(or their dad's money). They target the white, midde-to-upper-class male, because they're the consumers most likely to spend money on gimmicky stuff like a guitar plugged into a car.

I'm not saying that I agree with what their data says, nor that it's the only assumption to be made about everyone who drives a VW. I'm just saying that's how they come up with that kind of shit -- foir the 99x listeners. If they were to market it to people like, say you, for instance, they'd probably come up with something completely different.
