A warning for those with lead-foot
Speeding fines in Atlanta have increased significantly. Also, the State of GA now tacks on 9 different sur-charges. Fucking 9!!!
So for those of you who feel that 80 mph is a comfortable cruising speed, I'd recommend taking it down to 78. You'll thank me later...

Well aside from that being death on your tires that may be a good thing.
I just paid $235 for going 80 in a 55.
$200 fine reduced to $150 (because the judge understood that I was going with the flow of traffic), plus $85 in state surcharges. Thanks Gov Perdue!
I don't know. Maybe I do drive too fast, but 80 feels comfortable to me. And there are always people passing me like I'm standing still...

I got a speeding ticket on 75 North last December after the GWAR/Municipal Waste show. I was doing around 80mph in a 65. I had a really shitty night (not related to the perfomance of the bands) and I wasn't paying attention and then all of a sudden theres blue lights behind me. I don't think he actually got me on radar, so I got a $95 ticket for 10-12mph over instead of 15. This was my first offense.
Cop: What's that all over your shirt? (referring to my white shirt with GWAR blood all over it)
Me: Uhhhh...are you familar with the band GWAR?
Cop: ::sigh of disgust:: Yes
Me: I went to one of their concerts tonight
Cop: Ok...so how'd you get that on your shirt?

hahaha DumbCop!
I live past Gwinnett County now, so I have to navigate through the terrifying Straits of Construction every day. It's either a 45mph limit on Ga 316, or 55mph on I-85...both in work zones. Double the fine, plus local cops can use radar to get you even if you're going less than 10+. (They can't ticket you using radar like that outside a workzone unless you're doing 10+, but the Georgia State Patrol can.)
With those higher fines in mind, I set my cruise control for 60 in the workzone on the rare times I use 316, at 65 when I'm in the construction zone on I-85, at 70 if I'm in a 'regular' 55 mph zone, and 74 if I'm in a 65 mph zone. I can push it up to near 80 in that stretch of I-85 where the limit goes up to 70 but it's only for 3 miles or so.
My fuel economy drops off to below 40mpg when I'm going above 65mph, though, so if I'm feeling especially broke I'll stay at 65.

If you're going soon, don't make any lunch plans. You'll be there a while. Their fancy new computer system's got some bugs in it.

Don't even get me going on paying anything City of Atlanta-related in person.Strange wrote:Municipal Court.Knucklehead wrote:If you know, was that in Atlanta Municipal Court or in Fulton State Court?Strange wrote:I just paid $235 for going 80 in a 55.

I had a $70 traffic ticket to pay once. Waited in their line for 30 minutes (with the huge 'WE TAKE DEBIT CARDS' sign in full view) to be told that their card reader was down. Got out of line, went to the ATM in the cafeteria. Broken. Cut back to the front of the line to tell her that I had to go to Kroger to use their ATM. She said I couldn't leave the building until I paid my fine because she had my "file" open. I asked her what she proposed I do, and she said "borrow money from someone in line."
Me and everyone around me laughed pretty heartily and I left. My taxes go to the paychecks of some truly miserable morons.
Whatever you guys do, never let your tags expire. Last August I was pulled over in Buckhead on Piedmont Rd. My tags had only been lapsed for only 3 months. The officer told me that had I had Georgia tags on my vehicle, he would have had it impounded. I once had a ticket for a tag lapsed over a year, but only got a fine. I've never before had a cop to threaten to take my car away. This was a City of Atlanta cop, and he was a complete dick. They must be running low on rackets down there, to come up with shit like this.

I'm an Assistant Public Defender in DeKalb, and people, please, please please, if you are drunk and driving or have pot in your car:kfoll wrote:Whatever you guys do, never let your tags expire.
1. Make sure your tag is up to date
2. Your tag lights are working
3. Your brake lights are working
4. You are using your turn signals to change lanes
5. You aren't speeding
6. You're wearing your seatbelt.
Of course, drinking and driving is a bad idea anyway.
Indeed it is.Knucklehead wrote:I'm an Assistant Public Defender in DeKalb, and people, please, please please, if you are drunk and driving or have pot in your car:kfoll wrote:Whatever you guys do, never let your tags expire.

Also, come to a complete stop at stop signs. I heard about a girl who got DUI because she'd taken some mild pain medication, and the only reason they caught her was that she "rolled through" a stop sign.
