ATTN: GSU students/former students/whatever

Post by BlackRoija » Mon July 16th, 2007, 11:12 pm

I'm thinking of going to GSU after my senior year to major in Music Technology. Is anyone here able to comment on that if they've done it or anything? Is it a good decision if I want to get into the field? Is it a waste of time and should I try something else? Is the school good at education in that area?

I know the Art Institute of Atlanta offers the same degree, is it a better choice than GSU?

I don't really know much about GSU's program, but I think that GaTech just opened a Music Technology program. I'm not too sure about the details though.

They do, but it's a Master's degree. GSU's is a Bachelor's.

I can forward your questions to a friend of mine there and respond with his replies sometime soon.

There is a bachelor's program in the works, although it may not start for a couple more years.
It would really be something to be a part of the program in its infancy...

Would music technology be their music production program? If you are really thinking about trying to get into the recording industry, I would suggest that you take a look at the number of graduates actually landing paying jobs. I didn't go to school for it but I strongly considered it a few years back when I first started recording as a hobby. The market is flooded with graduates willing to work for nothing. What you get is a vicious cycle of places letting people intern and then never actually hiring them. I can't really blame them for utilizing the endless supply of free labor. After all, it is a business.
At any rate, recording is just like any other "art". You can get the piece of paper but in the real world it doesn't mean shit unless your going to teach or do something similar. People don't hire you in this field because of a degree, they hire you for who you have worked with and what you are capable of.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

@ Wireneck - yeah you nailed it!

anyways, the old show host for WNGTI majored in music management and he learned all of the technical knowhow. From what I've seen him do and what he's told me, the program is pretty decent.

As far as finding a job, who knows. From what I've seen from alot of people I know, finding a job in their field of study can be extremely rough. It took my boyfriend alittle over a year to find something somewhat related to his fields of study. He's just getting started!

also, you should probably look at technical schools too that offer 2 year programs...at GSU it's a 4 year program (obviuosly) but for the first 2 years for any school with a 4 year degree you'll have to do all the bullshit core classes before you start learning what you really need to know. Unfortunately for me, I don't think there are any 2 year programs for what I want to do!
They had you do a drug test and the forgot to test for drugs???
