Long Hair vs. Actual Musical Ability

Post by TSisterfan567 » Mon September 17th, 2007, 1:55 am

What is the relationship people make with that? I've played in a few extreme metal bands, and it never fails that on the initial day of jamming, I get looks like "who the fuck does he think he is?" I feel that most people aren't even interested in seeing what I can do with a bass after meeting me. I attribute this to my short hair, my over-the-top southern accent, and my unconventional instrument (fretless). In high school, I actually did have long hair, and people assumed I was good at what I did. While I did not shun them for thinking this way, it was a very different monster after I had to cut my hair in order to get a "real job" after graduation. I'm not one to point out the flaws of my "Brothers in Arms" but what is that connection we make with long hair and true musicianship?

It's a scientfic fact that when the hair follicles are pulled away from the scalp via the gravitational pull on the weight of hair longer than 12", the blood vessels in the brain are freer to expand, and this affects the outer gray matter which is the part of the brain that comprehends music, poetry, etc. Therefore, musical ability is enhanced by long hair.

If you don't believe that, just look at Mozart, Bach, etc. -- why do you think they call classical music: "Long-haired Music"?

I think the hair is often perceived as maybe some kind of way to up your metal points, or (my theory) more as some show of obvious seperation from anything non-metal...dedicated to sweating it out in the hot summer time and being turned down for jobs. Speaking as a long hair, I gotta say that it is possible to have hair touching your back pockets and have "real job." Maybe I'm taking myself too seriously. I rarely contribute to these discussions, but the hair issue is one I often involuntarily take to heart.

It's a stupid aspect of a subculture which hypocritically prides itself in going "against the mainstream" by implicitly requiring its members to conform to a standard mould.

It's no wonder why most of my friends are just normal people. I have few "metalhead" friends because frankly I just can't stand most of them.

heh, believe me I would have never cut it if I didn't have 2 keep it short. I work in retail in a semi-management position. If my hair hits my collar, I get written up by my superiors, as much bullshit as that is. I've been searching for a job that pays just as well w/o the strict guidelines. So far, theres no real luck, which isn't suprising since this is the south where conservative views overshadow human rights.

Your point is not very realistic. If you have to pay bills you make sacrifices, I couldn't have waited until some dream job came and smacked me in the forehead.

Realistic enough. I don't believe that it is possible to have a "dream job" just smack you in the forhead. I've made concious efforts to seek employment that does not hinder my personal preferences. I'll admit that it is not an easy task, but I want it bad enough to make it work. I'm an art handler by trade. I'm on staff at the (...) and I work freelance for countless other institutions in the Atlanta Metro area. You could even call it a career. My services are in demand whether I'm sporting hair or not. I think it's realistic, just not easy.

Having long hair isn't exactly a human right.

Long hair just gets stuck in your strings.

If your good at what you do then who cares what length your hair is. Long hair is just traditional I guess. And better for headbanging and whatnot
