UFC 85

Post by jswift » Thu June 5th, 2008, 3:51 pm

I hate to propogate stereotypes about the metal community (per, reading Nietzsche, playing the Dreamcast, etc.) but here's to hoping that at least some of you are into mixed martial arts.

Right now, it is a glorious time to be a fan of MMA, with top-notch shows coming out DREAM, WEC, and (hopefully) the upstart Affliction promotions.

We'll focus our attention on the sport's 800 pound gorilla for the time being, and the upcoming UFC 85 card.

For starters, this has been a cursed line-up, with nearly a dozen fighters pulling out of the show. For what it is worth, it is perchance one of the more paltry offerings in recent UFC history, with the less-than intriguing main events of Matt Hughes \ Thiago Alves and Michael Bisping \ Jason Day.

Anybody plan on watching this, or know of any metro bars that frequently have screenings?

i'm sure i'll check it out. i usually hit up bufallo wild wings or just order ppv's at my house. this card looking like it does means i'll not be putting it on my dish bill.

UFC 84 was a badass show though......in my opinion and AFFLICTION should end up being a great promotion.

I remember watching the first UFC PPV in 1993 and being absolutely in awe of how some 160 pound Brazilian guy could choke out guys twice his size with his feet. From that point on, I was hooked.

UFC 84 was awesome, but WEC 34 was the best card I've seen all year. Faber and Torres should get mad respect for their talent from this point on.

yeah, that was a great card. the torres fight was awesome. i was hoping that they were going to get all rocky on us and cut that swollen eye so the fight could continue. that fight was back and forth and super entertaining.

and the faber/pulver fight was great too. its not often you get to see a championship fight end up being an all out war for five full rounds......granted faber won every round, pulver still gave him one helluva fight. faber could very well be unstoppable at that weight and a beast at 155lbs if he wanted too.

and back to UFC 85.....sometimes the ppv's that look bad on paper end up being some of the best for the money. sometimes its nice to just see up and comers b/c they all try so hard to win and aren't trying so hard not to lose. big difference. and on the flipside of that, sometimes the ppv's that look badass on paper turn out to be total BS on fightnight.
