sludge in the south paper
So, I am trying to write a paper about sludge. I specifically need to look at the growth and popularity of sludge in the south. I need to try to explain why the south is a good breeding ground for sludge bands and need to highlight some distinctly southern aspects of the genre (it is for a grad level research class so I have to answer a question). I am so pissed off that Slow Southern Steel still hasn't had a screening around here because this would really help me figure some shit out and I am having a super hard time finding sources. I am thinking that I am going to have to dig through lyrics and interviews and maybe try to ask some band members some questions. I just don't even know where to start and I would appreciate suggestions/guidance. I also don't have the hugest legit library with cd booklets that have lyrics so maybe someone could let me dig through their collection? I might just give up and do something else, but thought that this would be an interesting subject. HELP!

For one thing, this is where it originated (Sabbath aside). For me it all started with Crowbar and just kinda crept out of NOLA and spread from there. Kinda like the NY hardcore scene has it's own kind of identity, the Sludge thing is much the same. I'm also going to venture that the use of weed and whiskey (to the point of being a lifestyle) contributes as much as the look or sound.
If you know any of the Parabellum guys you should really talk to one of them (either Todd or Shane...I can put you in touch with them if you'd like). I'm sure they have more concise thoughts on the matter than I could provide and they are the real deal. They've been around a while and have toured all over the southeast for nothing but the love of doing it.

Try contacting the film makers directly, that would be even better than watching the flick for a grad level paper, IMHO.
From a Blabbermouth article: ...executive-produced by Karim Khan (I'm Better Than Everyone Records) and directed by RWAKE vocalist CT and David Lipke with the additional and integral assistance of George Hancock, Alix Petrovich and BEER WOLF guitarist Christian Sweeney (who will be releasing a paperback version of the production)."
Those folks can't be too hard to track down through FB.
I would also try to interview the genre's patron saint, Mike Williams. I'm pretty sure dude loves to talk, if he's in shape to do so.
My opinion is much like Strange's. Weed, whiskey and fucking HUMIDITY mixed with slow sounds, poverty and devil vs god traditions of Delta blues are all large parts of the genre's primordial roots.
Should make an interesting paper. Link it up when you're done. What's your program, if you don't mind my asking.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I guess I am gonna have to interview people. I kinda know a bit about the history already, it's just hard to find any sources to cite to back up what I am saying. I need to get in touch with the dude from Rwake and Karim, but they don't have a very strong internet presence. Karim's record label website has been down forever
Yeah, I am pissed that the doc has been screened in other parts of the country but not in the south yet. I guess I am gonna try to brainstorm questions of what I should ask. Suggestions would be appreciated, too.
