Favorite Metal Albums

Post by Knucklehead » Tue February 7th, 2012, 11:17 am

I don't think anything like this has been done lately and I'm really curious what you guys have to say. So, list your favorite albums. Obviously, any number is arbitrary, so let's say ten.

Mine, off the top of my head:

Iron Maiden -- Killers
Metallica -- Kill 'Em All
Slayer -- South of Heaven. There, I said it.
Celtic Frost -- To Mega Therion
Raven -- All For One
Darkthrone -- Panzerfaust
Black Sabbath -- Paranoid
Destroyer 666 -- Cold Steel ... for An Iron Age
Gorgoroth -- Twilight of the Idols
Marduk -- Those of the Unlight

Not entirely convinced about the last.

Go.

In no particular order:

Kreator - Extreme Aggression
Prong - Cleansing
Nailbomb - s/t
Satyricon - Diabolical Now
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses
Venom - Black Metal
Exodus - Bonded by Blood
Metallica - And Justice for All
Sepultura - Arise/Beneath the Remains
Megadeth - So Far, So Good, So What?
Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
D.R.I. - Four of a Kind

I couldn't narrow it down to ten. Sadly, I had most of these on cassette and I don't have my cassettes anymore.

Gorguts- Erosion of Sanity
Suffocation- Effigy of the Forgotten

Slayer- Reign in Blood
Metallica- Kill them All
Electric Wizard- Dopethrone
Vale of Pnath- The Prodigal Empire
Vader- The Ultimate Incantation
Malevolent Creation- Ten Commandments
Cannibal Corpse- Tomb of the Mutliated

not a best of as much as a should have and enjoy as much you did the first time you heard it.

So you like Celtic Frost worship D'throne better than Hellhammer worship D'throne? (Me too, FWIW)

Never listened to that Marduk album, or the Gorgoroth. I gave up on the latter after Agonia sent me those reissues and it sounded like someone playing polka on wrong speed through an Antarctic AM radio station.

In no particular order off the top of my head...

Judas Priest - Stained Class (Greatest heavy metal album of all time)
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness (Greatest death metal album of all time)
Black Sabbath - Sabotage (Iommi at the top of his game along with the best performances from Butler and, especially, Ward to date.)
Motorhead - Ace of Spades, Overkill, or Rock N Roll (My favorite album changes frequently but their best 3 imo)
Death - Symbolic (The perfect mix of where Chuck came from and where he was going.)
Mercyful Fate - Melissa (The RIFFS man!!!!)
Repulsion - Horrified (Greatest grindcore album of all time)
Terrorizer - World Downfall (Sandoval + Pintado = unfuckingstoppable)
Slayer - Hell Awaits / Reign In Blood (I love both...)

... I really couldn't choose a tenth, there are several albums that all compete for that spot so I'll give honorable mentions (and have given many listens) to these:

Napalm Death - Scum (Duh)
Girlschool - Hit and Run (soooooooo good)
Dark Angel - Darkness Descends (Too fast, my ass.)
Splatterhouse - The House that Dead Built (Easily my favorite Carcass worship of all time... hell, I listen to this more than Carcass themselves)
Judas Priest - Killing Machine (Running Wild forever)
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone (The bible of stoner jams imo)
Insect Warfare - World Extermination (Greatest grindcore album in the last decade at least)
SPEWTILATOR - Badass motherfuckin' street cops with nothing to lose who don't play by the rules and are out for blood.

Almost impossible to narrow it down to 10, but...

Ahab - Call of the Wretched Sea
Paramaecium - Exhumed of the Earth
Ondskapt - Dödens Evangelium
Schaliach - Sonrise
Enslaved - Ruun
Autopsy - Mental Funeral
Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding
The Axis of Perdition - Deleted Scenes from the Transition Hospital
Esoteric - The Maniacal Vale
Vader - Litany

edit: Got to throw Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales in there even though technically it's an EP.

Funebrarum - The Sleep of Morbid Dreams
Arghoslent - Hornets of the Pogrom
Gorguts - Obscura
Enslaved - Below the Lights

I'm all over the place, son.

No room for Deathspell Omega, Infester, Demilich, or anything that I'm now wishing I had put on there instead. But this is official. No other albums will EVER be in my top ten.
Thanks,
SBG
