Best death metal album

Post by Brian » Mon August 5th, 2013, 7:47 am

Got into an interesting discussion with a friend of mine over the weekend. Short version is, even though I like black metal much more than death metal, I can't narrow down my favorite/best black metal album to just one. For death metal, though, there's a pretty clear-cut winner.

This is the real deal. Every second of every song, every riff is perfect. Genuinely the most hellish death metal album ever released and ever to be released.

What is your favorite dm record?

I have professed my undying love for Altars on numerous occasions, it is the single greatest death metal album of all time. There are no contenders.

I'm listening to a greater proportion of death these days than, say, five years ago and Black still makes my heart go a flutter. But enough of a disclaimer.

I'm not huge fan of Morbid Angel and some parts of Altars of Madness just strike me as dumb.

I'd prolly say The Eyes of Horror for the States and The Left Hand Path for Scandinavia.

I immediately (and perhaps inappropriately) wrote Seven Churches off as a Slayer knock-off and Beyond the Gates wasn't any better. But I went back to The Eyes of Horror about a billion times.

Entombed. There is really nothing more to say.

There is no clear-cut for me...

Diabolical Conquest I've yet to hear a recorded vocal performance better than Corchado's on this record.
Severed Survival
Necroticism

forgot to put this down first time around but it's pretty much given, anyway.
Altars
seven bands seven churches seven sages five magics / up the hammers to stay

Surprised no one's mentioned Scream Bloody Gore. No way at all to nail it down to one for me. I'd definitely consider Incantation's Onward to Golgotha, Autopsy's Mental Funeral, Cannibal Corpse's The Bleeding, and the Deicide s/t in the running during this era though.

Illud Divinum Insanus, clearly. Closely followed by The Unspoken King.

To be honest, The IV Crusade is my top favorite from them. But Realms is importantly significant.
