Best of 2014 so far

Post by Brian » Sun July 6th, 2014, 7:59 pm

The year's halfway through and has been very good. I thought 2013 was the best year for Metal in along time and 2014's going quite strong too. This is what I've liked. There is still a huge list of stuff I have not checked out.

Behemoth - The Satanist
Black Magic - Wizard's Spell
Cauldron Black Ram - Stalagmire
Dark Fury - Synninghtwait
Dead Congregation - Promulgation of the Fall
Diocletian - Gesundrian
Domains - Sinister Ceremonies
Funereal Presence - The Archer Takes Aim
Heresiarch - Waelwulf EP
Hetrozertzen/Dodsengel split
High Spirits - You Are Here
Incantation - Dirges of Elyzium
Innsmouth - Consumed by Elder Sign
Kriegsmaschine - The Enemy of Man
Morbid Slaughter - Wicca EP
Possession - Anneliese EP
Sacrificio - demo
Satan's Satyrs - Die Screaming
Skull Fist - Chasing the Dream
Teitanblood - Death
Violent Hammer - More Victims

Rock, rock, 'til you drop.

Domains -- Sinister Ceremonies
Hellgoat -- End of Man
Morbid Slaughter -- Wicca
Spewtilator -- Goatthrower
LVTHN -- Adversarialism

I still have to give those Triptykon, Teitanblood, and Miasmal records a proper listen.

I loved that first Miasmal record, but I don't know if the second one is going to get the job done. It may just be the production: I was disappointed with MOP when it was first released.

I would add The Furor's Impending Revelation to any 2014 lists. Totally ripping, along the lines of Begrime Exemious or Axis of Advance or whichever black/death metal hybrid you please.

Also Artificial Brain and Pyrrhon are getting lots of plays.

And seconding Domains, which probably would've been my AOtY had it not been for that Behemoth.

That Furor record is pretty good but that name... that is just a really shitty band name.

My favorites thus far:

Internal Rot "Mental Hygiene"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2hsEw27LAI

PLF "Ultimate Whirlwind Of Incineration"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0Yjr8W_Bvo

Super Fun Happy Slide "Drop Your Pants and Grind"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEyYRqk ... u0T1BehQ8e
SPEWTILATOR - Badass motherfuckin' street cops with nothing to lose who don't play by the rules and are out for blood.

Dead Congregation
Ripper
Vanhelgd
Funereal Presence
Spectral Lore
Falconer
Black Magic
Midnight

some others I need to hear more, mainly black/death, haven't kept up with other genres as much this year.

I STILL have not checked this out.

So I'll nominate Midnight - No Mercy for Mayhem and this Skullshitter split. Pretty sure those both came out this year.

Why is it already November??

This year's been really great, almost on par with last year, which I thought was the best year for metal in a decade, and somehow BEHEMOTH is near the top for me. It's just a monster record. I never would have guessed they'd do something like this. Easily their best album.

All year I've been like "I need to check out that Behemoth album... oh look, a gif of Rob Ford falling down. Hahaha!" Okay, I finally bought it.

In related news: Everyone remember to update your Amazon wish lists so your in-laws can just click "Add To Cart" instead of thinking real hard about what it is they're buying. Hooray Xmas!!

Toxik Death - Speed Metal Hell
Very snarly album as Infant Death's War. Norway is really dominating the speed metal throne.
Nunslaughter - Angelic Dread
About damn time they released an album. And it's just nastier like always.
Cannabis Corpse - From Wisdom to Baked
Belphegor - Conjuring the Dead
(I mentioned this one on the other thread, it was better than I thought it was).

I still need to listen to Behemoth's Satanist like Brian mentioned, along with Incantation's Dirges of Elysium.

Im going to have to get back to ya on Satanic Warmaster's new release Fimbulwinter.
