the DEFINITION OF METAL thread
it seems to be a hot topic lately.........what do you guys thing?
this is what i think....
so, i'm not into trying to give a "definition" of metal. like i've said before, if you are confused about what is and what isn't metal, you aren't metal at all. i will say that metalcore isn't metal. trendy styles of heavy music such as nu-metal, metalcore, rap-core......etc. are not metal! there are some pretty good metalcore bands out there, they just put out all their good albums years ago. before every band in the genre started ripping off at the gates and then ultimately regurgitating all the same riffs with annoying screams as the vocals.
but, like i said.....if theres debate about a band and whether or not its metal than its not metal. doesn't make them suck..........just makes them not metal.

"real metal" was around when Morbid Angel were still in diapers (and I'm not talking about their homo tour bus antics). tho I will say they easily pass the "real metal" test.Matt wrote:heres my definition of real metal and i think donny will agree with me on this...... try listening to morbid angel. thats real metal.
For me "real metal" encompasses classic metal (Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden), death metal (Possessed), black metal (Venom), thrash & speed metal (Metallica) and progressive metal. I don't really grok a lot of the newer shit...
I am pretty sure I left high school shit behind along time ago not trying to be a dick just seems like its that way on here your not in the metal click so your not cool which I could careless I was just wondering but thanks for the defif you are confused about what is and what isn't metal, you aren't metal at all

Metal is the most extreme type of music there is. I agree with Blaze in saying metalcore, nu metal, rap metal, ect. isnt metal. Because I think metal has something else, its kind of like a life style or something else, I dont know, maybe you cant explain it. And those kind of bands just dont have it. There are quite a few bands iv noticed on the atlmetal site that are not metal one bit, but this isnt a thread about that so I wont get into that.
it seems to me that most "metal heads" call a band "not metal" when they dont like them. split it up, its not true metal because this band does this or that. metal is a genre. not a definition. i place any bands that are heavy as shit into the "metal" catagory. the only reason i ever use "death metal" "speed metal" "tech-metal" or any others, is simply to describe what the band sounds like. thats just my opinion, i try to have a open mind. if i like a band, i like it. simple. if i dont like it. i dont say its because its "nu-metal" i say its because that band sucks.
hope you all fucking rot

Agreed!Death2all wrote:To tell you the truth I don't think it really matters I lump it all into metal instead of trying to label everything this is just my opinion
Also, I think "Heavy Music" should just be left at that "Heavy Music". I don't understand what the big deal is with trying to, like Death said, "label" a band? Why can't it just be "Heavy Music" and either you like the band/bands or you don't? This whole "labeling" thing gets people so pissed off at each other and at bands for calling themselves something that someone thinks they are not. As far as I am concerned, I don't try to "label" any bands whatsoever. If I like the band/bands I listen to them, if I don't like them then I don't listen to them. I honestly think people see what a band is labeling themselves as or what they have been labeled as and not even giving them a chance. Just kinda sucks if you ask me. Oh well, just my thoughts on the topic. Anyone else care to comment?
Later,
Jeremy

as shown here i stated that something "not" being metal doesn't make it suck. matter of fact i listen to a lot of other genres and bands......i listen to a lot of "non" metal music..... hank III, clutch, alice in chains, nick cave, tom waits....the list goes on.but, like i said.....if theres debate about a band and whether or not its metal than its not metal. doesn't make them suck..........just makes them not metal.
like neal said....metal is a lifestyle. thats why we give a damn about what is called metal and what isn't. and its not a deal of a click. i hang out with a lot of folks who aren't into metal at all and i could care less............i just don't like people thinking they are metal b/c they listen to something like ICP or dope or some garbage like that
and Death2all, this thread was basically started b/c of you constantly asking people what they think metal is. and like you, i'm not trying to be a dick but you can't act "above" the thread.
