Almost identical riffs

Post by zla vydra » Tue April 12th, 2022, 9:55 pm

Check out these opening riffs:

1) Maiden - "Two Minutes to Midnight"

2) Saxon - "Power and the Glory"

3) Tokyo Blade - "Sunrise in Tokyo"

Rather similar, no?

I've been down these kinds of things many a time and usually I'm not too terribly interested because it's obvious that the similarity is only to a degree that would indicate coincidence rather than anything else. it gets funny to me when you have people claiming plagiarism ("overkill ripped off metallica!!!11!!"). to be super interesting to me the similarity would have to be uncanny.

I made note of this elsewhere on some other board in a thread or some such called "riff police" or thereabouts. this isn't necessarily uncanny but it was interesting to me in that it was two completely disparate bands from disparate scenes around the same time writing a riff with different notes but the same exact rhythm pattern.
