Metallica, Pantera*, Suicidal Tendencies @ Mercedes Benz

Post by MS_39455 » Fri September 20th, 2024, 9:56 am

June 3, 2025. Maybe, possibly, might be thinking about actually going to this. Never seen any Metallica and couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on any previous tour due to horseshit openers and cost. Might do this one. On sale September 27.

I'm probably going to this. I've seen Metallica a handful of times--but not since 2009. Never saw Pantera back-when, so I'll see Phil and the Pandering-Tera$'s. And Suicidal as an opener isn't the worst choice in existence.

Agreed. I saw them the following month, opening for Ozzy. And then again a couple of times in '88, but not since. The Black Album is a stark dividing line, in my view.

I enjoyed the show back in 2009 at Philips Arena, but, damn, that was 15 years ago. I saw them open for Ozzy as well, about 6 weeks before that Bronco Bowl (Dallas) show. Also at the Omni on the Justice tour (Queensryche opened and sucked).

Also saw ST at the Metroplex on the Join the Army tour, so seeing 60-year old Mike running back and forth with Dillinger Escape Plan guy and little Trujillo/Weinberg is not high on my list either.

I know I sound like an asshole, but seeing "legacy band" tours these days is usually (but not always - MF/King Diamond) a letdown. And here I go buying Testament/Kreator tickets...

I was unimpressed -- Geoff Tate was complaining that people were throwing beer bottles at the band.

Of course!! We were there to see Metallica! Get off the damn stage!

it's not like metallica was going to play longer if you force the openers off the stage, 80s youthknuck.

geoff is, and probably was back then, an ass, but throwing bottles is degenerate. but degeneracy is rock n roll, so... ? conclusion not reached.

I will concede I'm listening to a queensryche set from 2/5/89 which was a few days before the atl show, and geoff's voice is uncharacteristically not strong and kind of shaky for that time period. maybe the rigors of tour, or maybe illness, who knows. shows from earlier in 88 or later in 91 sound way better. plus in 91 they're headlining and get to actually play more stuff from the first two recs. I guess this is all to say I'd rather see ryche in 91 than 89, after all. the end.

I've softened my stance on Queensryche in the last few years. I thought they were poser, false-metal douchebags in the 80s, but I can appreciate their songs better now in my middle age. I've seen them a few times recently, including once at 37 Main in Johns Creek (remember that?), opening for Priest at the Alpharetta place, and headlining one night at Hell's Heroes. They were excellent each time, and LaTorre nails those old tunes.
