I heard a direct Meshuggah influence in Tool's last album.

I don't know. I wouldn't necessarily agree that they're "One of the most influential bands in Metal," but they've influenced me to think about music (especially with regards to time and harmony/dischord) in different ways. And they never cease to impress me with what they're capable of producing/achieving.

Agreed.

Also, I hear a lot of Meshuggah in bands like Gojira and Textures. They might not have the influence of say, Slayer, but they definitely have made their mark on the metal world.

Too bad this tour is skipping ATL, Cynic and The Faceless' new albums both have well deserved 9/10 reviews on blabbermouth. Anyone who likes Meshuggah should definitely check them out, this is one of the few American tours I've seen in a while where every band is worth it.

Meshuggah albums on a whole are pretty boring, but the best songs on each are amazing.

First off, Tool isn't even metal. And I guess "influential" is relative, I find their influence on the metal world a bit iffy, if that being substantial at all.

Oh well, I'm not saying I totally neglect them, I like a few songs.

Who gives a fuck? How does that make them any less influential? Just because the artists they influence don't play the same style of music doesn't mean their influence has any less meaning.

That's just like saying Johnny Cash's influence on all the punk and rock bands doesn't matter because they don't play country.

I have never, ever, not once fucking ever given Tool a chance. What's their best album?

My favorite is AEnema, followed closely by Opiate.

There's good stuff on their later albums as well, I've just found it hard to get into them for personal reasons. Their old stuff was good hard rock. (Opiate is the best example of this. Nice and raw.) Their newer stuff is very Art-y. Aenema is right in between. Good mix of both.

I think this might actually merit a road trip if I can swing it.

And while I don't necessarily agree with your last sentence, I do think it's a fair statement. I don't find their albums boring, but after listening to one I do have the feeling that my brain has been removed from my skull, mashed into a substance not unlike Jello that has gotten warm and lost it's consistency, and then poured back into my head.

It does when the artists they influence suck.

I guess I forgot that fucking ALESTORM is better than Tool, and Meshuggah for that matter. Oops.

I don't know about the lot of you, but Meshuggah's music has had a HUGE impact on my music writing. They made me realize the nearly infinite possibilites that can be found in polyrhythmic playing. When I first heard the band, I immediately thought 'wow, these guys are fucking rhythmic geniuses.'

Not to mention, Fredrick Thordendal's fusion-like, dissonant solos are fantastic. He knows exactly what to play and when. And don't get me started on Tomas Haake's drum skills. The whole band is oozing talent out their orficies. Even the vocalist... how he adheres so precisely to those fucking wacky rhythms with his voice, is beyond me. That shit isn't easy to do.

LOL! Couldn't have said it better myself.

Well, I prefer their music style better than Tool and Meshuggah's at least. But it probably depends, Meshuggah and Tool both fall under the same category for why their music is lacking. Alestorm is at least fun and jovial.
