Selling out in my mind requires changing your sound to aquire more fans, ie Metallica or Green Day.
Blood Mountain sounds different, but it certainly isn't more commercially friendly.

Very true. Although folks keep trying since Mastodon were on Conan and are nominated for a Grammy. Fact remains that they've only gotten better with each album and sellout is a painfully overused term.
Fuck it, Dude, let's go bowling.

Fuck 'em because they're not metal? Or because you secretly love Nirvana too?

Grammy? Whaaa?
I think that the Mastodon record is the heaviest, and most experimental metal album to come out on one of the non-metal dominated major labels in a very long time.
So, no, in my opinion that's not really selling out.

I really, really, truly, madly, and deeply, dislike Mastodon's music. It sounds like it was recorded on tape in someone's basement. It doesn't speak to me very much. It must be crazy experimental because to me it doesn't even sound like metal. It's just one dude's opinion, which can't count for much, but I fucking hate Mastodon.

Mastodon isnt bad, I like some of their music. I like their first EP the best though.
Converge is good, I like them a lot. Their shows are always insane and so much fun.

You know, they seem like really nice dudes. I met Brann at Swayze's one time, and he was a personable rube. They're from the ATL. I really WANT to like 'em, but I just can't get into it. I can't even put my finger on what it is, I just ain't feelin' it. I don't like the overall tonal texture of the recordings. I think, personally it's a lot of the chord voicings, don't resonate, no pun intended, with me. I don't like the way the bass lines roll out. I'm just not feelin' it.
It really reminds me of toughened-up, progged-out Nirvana.
