Rest assured that you are not the only one.
Not that I expect it to help, but do know that us selling tickets is in no way lining our pockets. The Masquerade strongly suggests (read--requires) that opening bands sell tickets.
Masquerade-selected-non-genre-appropriate bands will open these sort of shows from now on as the end result of this specific show will be me buying the bulk of the tickets we were supposed to sell.
Regards.

Man that blows. I would totally support every time when a band I know is opening a show, but I have no way to buy tickets ahead of time living as far as I do, so it's hit or miss. And they won't let yall sell them the night of the show - not that yall would have time to since i usually get there late, but it's the principle of the thing. Yall shouldn't have to pay to play there, which is what that amounts to.OA_Xeper wrote:Rest assured that you are not the only one.

Could you explain this part a bit? I'm not sure I follow you?OA_Xeper wrote:Masquerade-selected-non-genre-appropriate bands will open these sort of shows from now on as the end result of this specific show will be me buying the bulk of the tickets we were supposed to sell.
Let the joyous celebrations of Hell begin!
I am personally unfamiliar of any active Black Metal band with the ability to perform live in the state of Georgia except for Legions of Astaroth, Obscurum and Winds of Malice*. I imagine these bands would have an equally difficult time selling tickets.
Thus, bands will be booked by the Masquerade based simply on ticket sales. If I had to guess, bands with the ability to sell a million tickets would not be àpropos to the genre.
*This is not to insinuate that there are not other bands in the area (Demoncy, Lament Configuration, Hellgoat etc), but I was discussing bands that are actively playing live.

Absolutely right. Venues such as the Masquerade have turned to petty pocket-lining and favoritism to promote local bands who promise all their little teenie friends from high school will show up and pay to listen to their bland, tasteless, disgustingly prissy music. Real hardworking bands get shit on.

Oh...gotcha.
Well, my band isn't "according to Hoyle" Black Metal, but I wouldn't consider it inappropriate for us to open for Black Metal bands. Withered isn't Black Metal either but I think this is a really good bill/tour for them.
Getting caught up in genre specificity is pointless.
Also, while I get really frustrated trying to sell tickets to Masquerade shows sometimes (or even getting them to book us in the first place for that matter), they're a business. They do not give a flying fuck about your band, my band, or any other band. They want to get people into their establishment so they can sell them alcohol. They aren't trying to fuck you over. If you have the resources (people/time/etc.) to move the tickets then you're good. If you don't, then it can really suck. But that isn't their fault. And this isn't anything new. I've been playing shows in this town for 17 years and it has ALWAYS been this way. Always!
I'm not busting your balls here...just giving you my .02
It's hard. I mean, it is for me anyway. I'm a musician, not a ticketmaster outlet. Further, I'm in a 3-piece band and our drummer is antisocial. So that leaves 2 guys trying to sell 100 tickets for $15-$20 each to people who know they can see us for $5-$7 some other time.
Also, if you can't sell a lot of tickets to a band that no one's heard of outside of this message board, then the Masq is damn sure not going to put you on a show for a band that people actually WILL buy tickets to.
But the thing is, I know all this going in, and I still deal with it because I love playing there. The stage is great. The staff are really good folks (especially the techs, bar, door, and most of the security team). And when it works out; when a gig winds up going the way it's supposed to and there are people there that would never have heard of you otherwise, and you have a good set and gain new fans, then you can't beat it.
You just have to get past that feeling like you're getting fucked over and realize that you're the one who wanted the gig. They damn sure didn't call you and ask you to play it. If they did, then they like you a HELL of a lot better than they like me. (Granted, that wouldn't be saying much. haha)

While the latter is certainly possible, I was actually replying to a number of things in this thread...not all of which were yours. But most were, and most seemed to be regarding ticket sales:OA_Xeper wrote:Either I have been misleading, or you clearly missed the point.
I specifically said that the "having-to-sell-tickets" business should not be a problem and is, furthermore, not the reason for my recent comments.

Those were the points that spurred my reply. If, indeed, I missed the point than I apologize. I probably overstated things a bit as I tend to do. And to be perfectly honest, it's a matter on which I have to keep myself in check when I'm in such a position from time to time...as was probably evident from my reply as well.Which wouldn't be a real problem if there was actually some semblance of local support in this area.
Anyway, like I said, not trying to break balls. I really hope the show goes well for you. If I actually had some cash then I'd definitely hit you up for a ticket.
