Either he miscalculated the costs or he just didn't think it through because bringing them over is going to be frikkin expensive! He should do what MDF has done, just gradually build it up instead of going from small to really big. I hope this fest works out for the fans, remaining bands, and the dude who is trying to make this happen.
His overwhelming costs are no excuse for straight up disappearing and not communicating with the bands.

I won't even know if I can go to MDF for another month or two. Would really like to. There is also another fest the week before that I want to hit up. Ideally I'll go to both.

Wait -- the hangup was PayPal?! Really?! I'm pretty his bank could wire money to an account in Europe.

Just sayin'.

I suppose that the money could have been tied up in Paypal or he wasn't bringing money in because Paypal wasn't allowing it. However, Paypal troubles often = shadiness going on. I'm not saying that's the case, just speculating based on experience.

What I wonder is this; is this kind of music big enough to support a show with that many bands on it? Many of whom are travelling great distances (not cheap and has to be paid up front)? Not long before xmas? In TX? Is this kind of music really that popular?

I figure this kind of music is only appreciated by a very small segment of the metal listening population to begin with and that only a tiny fraction of that group would be willing and able to travel for it at that time of year.

What am I missing?

Which is why I always laugh when people say that metal is mainstream.

This is from Nuclear War Now! forum:

"TRIBULATION $2,700 (now refunded & going toward Zemial)
DEMIGOD ~$5,000
WEAPON ~$2,300
ADORIOR ~ $4,500
GRAVE UPHEAVAL + IMPETUOUS RITUAL ~$2,500
PAGAN ALTAR $4,400
GENERAL SURGERY ~$4,000
IGNIVOMOUS ~$7,500
MOURNFUL CONGREGATION ~$8,000
MITOCHONDRION ~$1,600
ANTAEUS ~$5,000
WORSHIP ~$2,600
ANATOMIA ~$2,500
CRUCIAMENTUM ~$2,500
HELL MILITIA ~$3,200 so far
WODENSTHRONE ~$3,000
ADVERSARIAL $1,200 (gas money)

That's over $60,000. Plus $2,000 deposit for the venue for the weekend, gear rental (~$3,000), money for the bands on top of flights (~$2,000), etc. Flights for US bands are about another $5,000. So that's about $72,000 at this point. Roughly 700 fest tickets were sold, so after fees that's about $66,500, plus another $6,000 or so from pre-fest tickets. That's ~$72,500 with $10,000 still frozen in paypal. So take that $62,500 and subtract $72,000+ from it, and you can see where the money has gone, and how far in the hole Danny is with this fest. It's easy to see how the money was gone with so many bands left to still be paid for... no need for a conspiracy theory"

"Metal" ain't monolithic. Depends on what you have in mind. Judas Priest ain't mainstream?

Funebrarum, Disma and Evoken wrote:We have all decided to cancel our appearances at "The Rites of Darkness Festival" in San Antonio, Texas on December 10-11th due to the fact that the promoter has still not followed through with his promises and obligations to us (tickets, transportation, hotels etc). We apologize to our fans who have already purchased tickets but the situation is beyond our control. We have reached the end of our patience with Daniel Serna and foresee only more problems. Again we are sorry to have to make this decision but this treatment and unprofessional behavior is unacceptable!!

Disma, Evoken, Funebrarum all canceled. My flight is non-refundable and I'm betting my ticket ain't either.

Rites of Darkness III will be the last one.
