About this: as you saw, my flyer said 9 p m. As you may have also seen, at 9 pm at 529 there were about 10 attendees present. I pushed the time back to 10 because I didnt want Living Decay to play to nobody. People come to shows late here. Its Atlanta time. I dont know why it is, but it is. The Masquerade has a tendency to put openers on far too early IMO, often cheating them out of a crowd, which is something im not going to do.easnoddy wrote:This show was great, my first at 529 (I don't live in ATL so I have an excuse...). A few things that struck me:
1 - Why not have bands start at 9ish? Some people have jobs/school/lives and can't hang out til 1:30. The Masquerade figured this out over a decade ago and started having shows start earlier.

Yeah, and I knew this would be the case. Another idea would be to put a local opener, touring acts, then local closers. Usually people come to see touring acts but for some reason people didn't stick around to see them?SlashAndThrash wrote: About this: as you saw, my flyer said 9 p m. Condition the audience by starting shows earlier. People always expect the show starts an hour after the specified time. So put 8 PM on the next one and start it a little after 9.

One million times this, especially for weekday shows.easnoddy wrote:Another idea would be to put a local opener, touring acts, then local closers. Usually people come to see touring acts but for some reason people didn't stick around to see them?

Yeah but then you get a whole run of shows people miss, and a wave of inconsistency among bookers starting late or early, and then a wake of bands who played to small early crowds for however long it takes for it to sink in that shows are starting earlier (it will never sink in).
In hindsight Mangled probably should've closed closed the show, but honestly the people were still at the venue. Whether or not people watch a band is something I have no control over. Coffin Dust and Organ Donor both played to a substantial amount of people and had a blast and got paid, and thats really all all I'm worried about.
Anyone can book a show, and if there are any issues with how I handled things, this city would be more than appreciative of more active hands doing things. But I am inclined to call this show a great success.

Then drove home to Athens.SlashAndThrash wrote:Yeah but then you get a whole run of shows people miss, and a wave of inconsistency among bookers starting late or early, and then a wake of bands who played to small early crowds for however long it takes for it to sink in that shows are starting earlier (it will never sink in).

Keep in mind i work in the ATL 2-3 days a week, but really wanted to check out Coffin Dust based on what i heard on youtube. Imagine my surprise when going into it i was very interested in Coffin Dust and mildly interersted in the other bands and coffin Dust bored me but Mangled and Organ Donor floored me.
I can say the same about seeing Cannabis Corpse, wasnt expecting them to be good and they were great.
I think theres something in the Richmond water. Some really good bands there. I think that explans Lamb Of god, the more they toured the less Richmond water they got...hence the downward trend in their music.

Back in HS 1991-1993 i used to drive from Montgomery to the masquerade which is a 2-3 hour trip about once a month to see bands like Deicide, Cancer, Disincarnate, Death, Demolition Hammer, Unleashed, Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation, Kreator, Morbid Angel, Napalm Death, etc.GameFreac wrote:Yeah reminds me of the times I drove from Nashville to see Cough and Vektor on weeknights then drive home for 3 hours and be in class at 8am.
Always worth it.
Was so pissed to have to sit through Din and Deadspeak to see those bands...
The first is still the best...the Complete Control Tour. Malevolent Creation on Retribution, Agnostic Front, Cannibal Corpse on Butchered At Birth, and Obituary on The End Complete. Classic.
