When you play the "Conspiracy" album backwards it gives the death hoax clues like Paul McCartney and "the white album"

Odinson is right. If you are of a certain age you first heard this shit when it was first released and all you knew about Mercyful Fate, Venom, Slayer, Bathory, Celtic Frost, etc...was what you saw in the lyrics, in the album art and what you could read in the very rare article. Hell, it was about impossible to find that shit on vinyl or tape in the first place; forget about "pre ordering die hard editions." There were no shots of Danzig and his kitty litter or Immortal's fake wall of amps floating around, if you get what I mean. The bands all seemed sincere in what they were into. This shit was freaky (which made it super addictive listening), it scared the bejeezus out of parents and teachers and it came out during the high point of the Satanic Panic which, of course, dovetailed with some very wacky Christianity also going on at the same time. (While a few years behind because it was in the backwards asshole of the nation, what happened to the WM3 is a good example of the Satanic Panic atmosphere.)
Not to patronize in any way, but if you got into metal in a post-internet world, this shit comes off way different than it did when all you had was a copy of Melissa to stare at and listen to over and over and...I can't really explain what would have happened had Watain filled a corporate rock club with rotting animal flesh and performed "Satanic rituals" in 1986.
My personal problem with Kind Diamond solo is that the sound is so compressed and over worked. Give me the organic rawness of the early MF shit any day.

yup.
and jus for general plug: forthcoming Chips & Beer#2 has a MASSIVE King Diamond piece, cornerstone being the strongest interview i've read since Metal Forces.
Total primer action, all necessary Fate/KD records delineated, ghost stories untangled and puzzled over in true foil hat wearing nerd fashion. all this shit presented with OCD illustrations courtesy of C&B resident fartist, the beav. Get ready.

Eurynomous often played Mercyful Fate at black circle gatherings, there's a fucking great Emperor cover of Gypsy on the Century Media release of In the Nightside Eclipse. There's also a great article about the recording of Abigail in this months Decibel. King Diamond explains that one of the major reasons for the change in sound from MF to KD was the departure of Hank Shermann (he wanted to add a funkier sound to the music) who had a very distinct writing style, like Into the Coven. Once Andy LaRocque (amazing guitarist) came in in had an impact on the sound.

If only LaRocque and Shermann could have co-exised... holy fuck.

I'm on Spotify right now listening to Melissa. I'm trying to give King Diamond another chance. The music is great and I understand how influential he was on metal, particularly black metal. I understand that we wouldn't have acts like Watain today if it weren't for King Diamond. But, I just can't get past his banshee voice. It grates on me. Remove the vocals and you've got a great album.
I love a great stage show, which I'm sure King Diamond does put on, but that wailing just puts me off. I don't know of any other metal artist that has the (ascended) balls to sing like that. I'm all for lots of make-up and over-the-top theatrics; it's simply a dislike of his voice that I have. He's great at what he does, I just don't like it.

I'm with you on voice hatred. I love King Diamond's voice. You know whose voices I hate?
Every single character on Family Guy. I watched one episode and vowed to never watch it again. I'm the only person in the world that doesn't watch that show, I'm a pariah, and I'm lucky my brothers even still talk to me.
If you can't stand his voice, you can't stand his voice. Don't force it or you'll just get a cramp.

I think his voice grows on you the more you listen and understand the story and context of the characters better,at least it did for me and I wouldnt want it anyother way.
And ya Im with you on family guy its stupid and I dont understand why so many people like it.
Idea balls anyone?
