We need a metro-area metal venue
Well, at least a metro venue friendly to smaller metal bands. The Masquerade is sort of a joke for that sort of thing at this point. I don't like having to drive thirty to forty minutes to see up-and-coming metal bands in the 'burbs, and I'm sure most of you don't either. What can we do about this?
30-40 minutes is nothing. I drive 2-3 hours whenever I go to shows. I don't even live in Atlanta, but I'm always there. It seems to me that the venue problem is not going to go away nor is the problem of fans not supporting metal. That's because the venues have to think about paying bills just like you and I do. Unless there's someone who's got unlimited funds that just want to throw money away.
I wouldn't complain at all... just be glad there's metal here at all. That's what keeps me going when I'm tempted to complain about having to leave shows without getting to party because I have to drive 3 hours when I'm dead tired in the wee hours of night when all the cops are out looking for an excuse to pull you over, and I've run out of cash because I spent it all at the gas pump, so I can't even get any coffee to keep me awake, and I'm so afraid I'll fall asleep at the wheel that I open the windows even in winter, and even then sometimes have to pull over for a little shut-eye, and then its times like that when I have to ask myself if it's all worthwhile, and I have to answer that yes it is, and someday or other it may pay off, who knows?

Lenny's
Drunken Unicorn
Masquerade hell room
even the claremont will hold shows from time to time
- that's what I can think of - there's not gonna be a metal specific venue in atlanta until the atlanta audience proves that it can pack one out most nights of the week.... These metal nights like habitual hardcore should be embraced and grown into a weekend event and then once those are going great grow it to twice a week. Then you'll start to see some changes.
Dudes - there are enough badass bands in ATL to make that work

little dude, shut the fuck up. you're spoiled. it could be better but it could be a whole hell of a lot worse. show me an area w/ 'thriving metal' and I'm sure you could find 'trendy gay' bands too, especially if you live there. besides if you're worried about trendy bands then you don't even want other metal bands around, else you become trendy. maybe you can do better in Montana, Iowa, etc.samsara wrote:Atlanta is probably THE worst place to start a metal band. It's always been this way, whatever gay trend is going on, that's what Atlanta's always about. Of course what I refer to as a "gay trend" some of you might refer to as "metal".
on the same note, don't expect a huge, profitable metal venue. none of those words fit together. good metal venues are little shit holes that pop up for 6months to a few years. they don't last, but don't let that slow ya down, it's their nature. and there are always going to be trendy gay bands. also fine because it gives the 'real metal' people something to rail on thus creating community.
now shut the fuck up and go see some metal.
More people should hold shows in their houses and basements.BoB wrote:little dude, shut the fuck up. you're spoiled. it could be better but it could be a whole hell of a lot worse. show me an area w/ 'thriving metal' and I'm sure you could find 'trendy gay' bands too, especially if you live there. besides if you're worried about trendy bands then you don't even want other metal bands around, else you become trendy. maybe you can do better in Montana, Iowa, etc.samsara wrote:Atlanta is probably THE worst place to start a metal band. As tractor pull as this may sound... Motherfuckers need to quit complaining and start throwing down. A "scene" is comprised of the people in it. IF you want a better scene GO MAKE ONE
Okay if Atlanta's such a great metal scene, then why is there no Classic Metalfest here? Why is there no Powermad? Because people just don't get into that stuff here. There's a much better appreciation for good metal in places like Chicago and Baltimore. That's why Cauldron Born (one of the most talented bands in recent years, in my opinion) had people come to see them and buy the albums at Classic Metalfest and Powermad, yet couldn't bring in the masses to local gigs here, in GA, where they originated.
