Just curious as to who you've seen that puts on the best show. Use whatever criteria for "best" you want, whether it be musical sound quality, stage show quality, or whatever.

The best show I've been to was a Tool concert at Philips Arena in October 2001, there were kickass video boards showing all this trippy stuff for every song, a badass performance of the instrumental "Triad" with a guest performance from the Melvins' drummer, and those weirdos from the "Schism" video dangled from the ceiling and did their weirdo dancing for a few of the songs. It was a month after the 9/11 stuff happened, so everyone in attendance was a lot more into the show than they probably would have been otherwise, and Tool put on an amazing show from beginning to end. Screaming all the "fuck _____ and fuck _____ " lines in the verse toward the end of "Aenima" with about 15,000 other people was something I'll never forget, you could literally feel the ground shaking with all the noise going on. Every song sounded just like it was coming off a CD, and 3 years later I still haven't been to a show that topped what I felt that night (though several have come close).

So what was your best show(s) and why?

"best" can relate to any number of different attributes. Maybe the most memorable for me was when I saw GG Allin at the Wrekroom. I think the year was 1991. I had heard all the rumors about this guy crapping on stage and throwing it into the crowd, screwing just about anything with a pulse and doing pretty much any drug in the world. "yeah yeah, we'll see"

So there am with Jon Kincaid at the first Atlanta show at the Wrekroom, curiously waiting in the back of the room - out of what I assumed was the range that poo could be thrown. GG walked out in nothing but a leather g-string, looks into the crowd, breaks a bottle over his bald head and starts banging a microphone into the fresh wound, opening it to the point where blood was gushing. "Holly shit! This freak is gonna spread AIDS all over the place!" He then hops off the stage and starts lunging toward people - the entire room moved in the opposite direction of whatever move he made. All around the club he went, the entire crowd franticly keeping away. It was like the running of the bulls. Back on stage and after a short tirade on the mic, he picks up his mic stand and wails it fast-ball style at this group of frat boys and their sorority girls striking one of the sorority bow-heads. "Holly shit!" Everything after that point is now a blur - perhaps from shock. He swung from the rafters, fell from the rafters, sang a few songs and then trashed the drum kit. One of the frat boys tried to start a fight with GG but pretty much got his ass handed to him. There was also a lustful interlude with a mannequin body that happened to be in the club (ala lame theme-restaurant memorabilia) - that mannequin later hung from the same rafters, covered in blood.

What's worse is the video that I later saw of the aftershow back stage scenes. I'll just say it involved a fat redneck chick with a tatoo on her ass, a bottle of ketchup, french fries and a turkey baster...

The Rolling Stones at Turner Field!

The stadium was sold out. The stage was HUGE! In the middle of their set, they walked on a walkway that connected the main stage to this smaller one in the middle of the field and they played a few songs on it. There were like 4 huge screens above the stage and they moved. Psychedelic effects were added to the footage on the screens. Above the screens were the pyrotechnics. Wow. Those were awesome. They lit those during Sympathy for the Devil and confetti came out during Jumping Jack Flash. I remember Mick Jagger had on a black shirt with Mick written on it in red shiny letters. Keith had on a green shiny (maybe silk) shirt over a blue one. They also played for 4 1/2 hours without losing any energy or messing up. $100 bucks for my ticket was worth every penny!

Ozzfest 2000 is a close second. It was on the Fourth of July...Ozzy and Sharon's anniversary.
Metallica at Turner Field last summer was great too. I got close up pics of them. I didn't say Linkin Park, I said Metallica.

edit: add Ozzfest 2004 to that list!
They had you do a drug test and the forgot to test for drugs???

That would have to be a strong tie between Obituary and Acid Bath. Both were a LONG time ago at the Ritz in Tampa. Cannibal Corpse with Chris Barnes also put on a hell of a show.

Hard to say just one.....
  • Pain of Salvation, Spring of 2000 at ProgPower USA 1 (near Chicago)</li>
  • Dead Can Dance, The Roxy Theater in Buckhead</li>
  • Dream Theater, House of Blues in Orlando (or the show at HoB in Chicago)</li>
  • Ozric Tentacles, Variety Playhouse, Atlanta</li>
  • Children of Bodom, the Masquerade, Atlanta</li>
There are so many other excellent shows I've seen, too. Nightwish and Devin Townsend Band at various Progpower Fests, Trans-Siberian Orchestra three years ago at the Tabernacle, Opeth, Slayer, etc. Tough call!

Vibrations of Doom Magazine was in attendance at the New Jersey Metalfest a few years back... There was no way I was going to miss this one... The 2 day event (considerng we were driving like 13 - 14 hours each way) was VERY exhausting... However, between Lincoln Archibald and I we have over 20 hours of footage of that 2 day festival.

The BIGGEST highlight was seeing Diamond Head with the near original lineup. I nearly had tears in my eyes. It was their first U.S. appearance ever I believe, at least in over 30 years, and of course I have the footage all on high 8. Plus, to be able to see and film Saxon, Witchfynde, Nuclear Assault, Nightmare and several other 80's bands. You all know what a sucker V.O.D. is for 80's metal! But not only that, Abdullah KILLED with it's 70's styled doom/stoner acoustic and heavy stuff, plus the first North American festival appearance of Dark Funeral!! And of course to see fave Texans Vesperian Sorrow, and shock rock 80's crazies Impaler, they had fake blood, zombie flesh eating, and some cheesy wrestling moves! Those guys were kicking the shit out of each other!!

As for Atlanta shows, one of the most crushing performances I've seen in awhile was when Behemoth opened up for Deicide. (Videotaped by yours truly of course). And though it's not metal, a Fear show is always jam packed and full of insane fans. The U.K. Subhumans packed the house at the cotton club, it was good to see even young kids recognizing who the real punk legends were... Oh yeah, and one of the best shows (in Spartanburg South Carolina) EVER to make me feel like I was living in Norwway was the Emperor/Divine Empire/Borknagar/Witchery show!! Ungodly music and Emperor and Witchery absolutely killed!!!

HELL YES, that was an amazing performance. The drummer was doing windmills inbetween blastbeats and double-kicking that absolutely blew my mind, and the entire band was in perfect synchronization with everything. That was the performance that got me hooked on them, I try to play something by them every week on the show. They're definitely at their musical peak right now.

No, I wasn't a fan of the band until after that, but I remember hearing about it. God I can't remember what I was listening to before TON. :3y3s: :ch41n:

Nope and Nope, didn't get into country music until 2002. :p1st0ls:

Garth I have no respect for. He got big and then retired before he died or got killed, all artists should play and play until they can't play anymore. :drum:

I hope you're joking...

2 words for you: St. Anger. Your argument is now null and void. :D
