Special guest reunion (announced March 1st)

Who could that possibly be? And how could that possibly top Cirith Ungol in their own hometown?

Picked up tickets for Shadow Woods Fest up in Maryland late September. It's an actual camping fest (not just a field with a ton of tents). I don't think I've been quite this excited for a fest where I don't even know most of the bands.

That's the grand-daddy of American metal fests. There are maniacs on this board that have been a dozen times. I've only been twice.

You'll want to get your accommodations square away very soon. There are two schools of thinking there: stay close to the Edison lot, so you can sleep in later, or stay close to the Ramshead and th Soundstage, so the stumble home is shorter.

I'm afraid that a fair amount of hotels will already be booked, however.

I'm afraid of that too. Anyways don't think I'll be able to go, as usual life gets in the way. I had hopes to getting to a fest this year though. The ones near us (Carolina and Jacksonville in May) which are easily doable but have mostly shit bands.

You can usually score cheap flights to Cleveland and Chicago year round, about 80ish. Lots of good stuff between those two.

MDF is fun, but a total cash grab anymore--and HUGE.

Hells Headbash still has tickets and rooms available and stuff, not a super expensive endeavor.

Metal Threat seems awesome (smaller scale, diverse genre), but pretty much sold out.

Definitely this. If you're old, or fat, or lazy like me. My dogs and legs are tired after a day of headbanging and drinking, I like being just a few steps away from my bed. I'm typically awake well enough ahead of doors for any of the days of the fest. Regardless of how much partying I did the day prior.

I knew it was going to, especially with a venue capacity of ~400. So we jumped on that as soon as we were able to. Looking forward to the Side Stage too, even though it's an additional price.
