Possessed - May 22 - Masquerade

Post by zla vydra » Fri April 21st, 2023, 3:03 pm

Considering this because I didn't stick around to see them in Houston. If anyone caught them, how were they?

they was purty darn good. loud, fast, n tight. I never seen them back when they had sad. int. as the backing band, and wasn't what you would call "around" in the 80s, so I can't compare. jeff's voice isn't quite what it used to be from what I can tell, but much like mr. dan beehler, he still leaves it all on the stage.

I'm not sure if masq -- hell is an upgrade from the basement where the pozest show was originally booked 3 (!) years ago, but we'll see.

Their Hell's Heroes set was great. The audience was pretty dead after three days of raging unfortunately. Saw 'em once at MDF (2009 I think) and this was as good or better. Nice long set. Will definitely put up with Masquerade bullshit to see it again.

I think I'm sold, based on the set list. See you there.

Conclusions:
Black Moriah was cool for 15 minutes. They played for 45 minutes.
Uada impressed once the mix cleared up.
Possessed:
Backing band rips
Becerra was fucking hammered and slurring his between-songs banter but the effort was definitely there
Cool to hear 3 Eyes of Horror tunes and I'm glad I stuck around for "Burning in Hell."

The whole cowboy/black metal thing that The Black Moriah had going on didn't really click for me. I told Dan that I liked one of their riffs, but I later realized that it was in the Bolt Thrower style. So duh. And their bass player was super-talented.

A little bit of UADA's atmosphere goes a long way for me. And the owl hoots were killing me. But I like the idea of UADA.

Possessed's ridiculously late start (exacerbated by UADA's late finish) sucked. Becerra being drunk sucked -- I could only understand very fifth word that he said. The guitars were too low in the mix, for my taste, and I could barely hear them.

But they fucking played My Belief and Storm in My Mind, so it was a win in my book. I thought that both the guitarists did a really good job of playing those old solos. Particularly the LaLonde solos, which I have always assumed were the more radical.

They closed with Burning in Hell.
