I wrote a pretty long review and then deleted it. It was basically a longwinded way of saying "Go buy this album the day it comes out." You'll be glad that you did.

Hated? Really? Have you ever seen them live?
They're one of those bands that usually sound okay recorded but incredible live. But they've really stepped it up on this one.
haha, you said "BM."

I haven't seen 'em live. Our guitar player goes on and on about how it's a totally different experience. I always ragged on 'em and called 'em Classic Rock Metal, but I'm actually interested in this latest colon squeeze. Maybe, just maybe, it will be a winner.

I feel really dumb for staring at this topic for a while thinking "who in the fuck is Blood Mountain?"
...then I realized who you were talking about.

Good shit. They're awesome live. Anybody who hasn't seen them yet, go see them. They have a show coming up.

The appeal of this band has been lost on me. Something about seeing those dudes at El Myr all the time, or the time Troy grabbed my ass.
I dunno, though.

i gotta say that from the two songs that i just listened to i'm not all that into this stuff. Capillarian Crest sounds like 6 different songs piled into one and Crystal Skull's vocals bring down the cool main riff and then it goes into the prog circle jerk. i've always thought that mastodon were very good at putting their musical ideas into well thought out songs but these songs leave me a little off.

Yeah but can you really have a "prog circle jerk" in a 3 minute song though? We're not talking Tool or Dream Theater here, you must mean the part with the little drum and bass breakdown about a minute in. I'm listening to Crystal Skull right now and I think it rocks pretty hard, after that little 45-second breakdown it gets crunchy as hell.
We got in a 3 song sampler today with Crystal Skull, Capillarian Crest, and The Wolf Is Loose on it. I'm impressed, I'll be looking forward to the full album too.

who said that a circle jerk needed to take up much time anyway?
crystal skull is a fair song. it has strong music but some of the vocal ideas are horrible. like the breathy, whispered vocals at the start of the track that bring down an otherwise cool riff.
capillarian crest = four different songs in one =
:00-1:09(song I)
1:00-2:40(prog whack off, songII)
2:40-3:10(songIII)
3:10-4:20(song IV)
......coincidence that the last note stops on 4:20?

Man you haven't been in many good circle jerks have you? The longer the better!
I mean... uh... yeah, hooray new Mastodon album. Check out the song we played on Wrekage last night for those of you who don't already "own" the album, it's a little more thrashier than the other two they've songs put out so far.
