Roads weren't too bad. Interstates were fine and all the main roads were okay. I came in to the Masq. via Freedom Parkway from the Downtown Connector and then down the hill on North Ave. to the Masquerade and had no problems.
There are a few spots on some roads in Dekalb that had ice patches -- mostly at the bottoms of hills and in shady spots -- but just take your time if you're on a secondary road and be watchful for cones if they've blocked off a road. Northlake Parkway, behind Northlake Mall, was one such closure; had to detour through the mall parking lot.

Yeah I drove from Exit 290 to 249 with no problems.
Of course, I missed Cynic and got there right when they ended their set. Lame.
But BTBAM was worth it. It was the 3rd time I've seen them but they played their new stuff, my favorite song again (Ants), Swim to the Moon/White Walls back to back and a few songs I haven't heard live before.
Setlist:
Obfuscation
Disease, Injury, Madness
More of Myself to Kill
Ants of the Sky
Alaska
Swim to the Moon
--------------------------------------------
White Walls
Of course the new stuff sounded great and More of Myself to Kill was 10x better live, much like Shevanel Cut a Flip is on Colors Live. The production just kills the s/t for me so it was cool to hear that. Swim to the Moon was just epic and the highlight, followed by White Walls, so the combination of 2 long epic songs as the closers was great.
I got the Great Misdirect and a Cynic shirt. I just hope Cynic comes back soon so I can finally see them.

I know that must have been scary as shit, but reading that made me crack up.WREKage-Paul wrote: Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Scary shit. Having done a 270 -- twice -- on an ice-coated I-75 bridge in my mom's old Torino wagon when I was 16, in front of 4 cops, I don't wanna do that again.
Of course, the cops were all pointing at me and dying of laughter. (I didn't hit anything, it just looked funny as shit.)
My mom and I went sledding once in her '86 Olds Cutlass (back in the blizzard of...I don't know 91-92 maybe???). We went out in the snow to run an errand and went down a long hill with absolutely no traction whatsoever. She did an expert job of keeping us on the road and facing the right direction but it was still freaky as hell. We quickly decided that whatever we were heading out to do wasn't all that important and we needed to go back home post-haste.
Anyway, the show was killer.
Scale the Summit sounded cool. I'm not familiar with the band but they played well and their music was very trippy. A good fit for this bill.
Dev played an awesome set despite a serious technical dilemma (resulting in the click track being audible through the PA). You could tell he was embarrassed as shit but the crowd seemed to be behind him and he was making jokes about it throughout the rest of the set. His voice sounded perfect. ...stellar even. And as expected his persona/stage presence was thoroughly entertaining. "But the truth is I'm a very uncomfortable Canadian in a cheap suit." LOL
This was my second time seeing Cynic. And again, it bordered on a religious experience for me. Expert musicianship throughout. Great live sound/tone. I don't think I have ever heard more clear or articulate guitar and bass tone than that...ever. I would have liked to have heard a few more tracks from Focus, but regardless, it was just flat out amazing (imo).
BTBAM sounded good and put on a good show, but I was still mentally drained by the awesomeness I had already witnessed.
My only complaint is that I wish Devy and Cynic could have had longer sets. That said, it was a killer show so I was a happy Strange.

The fact that they were trippin hard on some shit and playing flawlessly just made it that more of a face melter.Strange wrote:This was my second time seeing Cynic. Acoording to our friend William who drove over from Mississippi, "Veil of Maya" was in their setlist but was scrapped due to a keyboard patch issue. I remember thinking "last song, huh? It's gotta be Veil" and was surprised when it wasn't.Strange wrote: This was my second time seeing Cynic. And again, it bordered on a religious experience for me. Expert musicianship throughout. Agreed completely. I'd really like to see both bands return with longer sets. Devy could probably headline; he had a decent amount of the mostly BtB&M crowd 'with him.'My only complaint is that I wish Devy and Cynic could have had longer sets. My understanding is that they weren't actually tripping in terms of drugs, but rather sufferring from mad sleep deprivation and jetlag, having just come in from Australia...where the local time is tomorrow!Jordan wrote: The fact that they were trippin hard on some shit and playing flawlessly just made it that more of a face melter.
But having plenty of experience with both I'll take acid over sleep dep any day!
Bummer. I would have rather heard Uroboric Forms though.Acoording to our friend William who drove over from Mississippi, "Veil of Maya" was in their setlist but was scrapped due to a keyboard patch issue. I remember thinking "last song, huh? It's gotta be Veil" and was surprised when it wasn't.
Maybe that was the case, but I also think Devy had a very strong fan showing in his own right, and a lot of them just happened to hang for BTBAM. Regardless, my understanding was that this tour was a test for Dev and co. He wanted to test out the new band and new material, and probably his own sanity and ability to cope as well. And if all goes well then a larger tour with full instrumentation and the female vocalist from the album would eventually follow.Agreed completely. I was really happy that the crowd didn't turn on him as a result of the click track issue. If anything it seemed to rally the crowd behind him a bit.
I'm still just getting into his solo stuff (believe it or not) but I really enjoyed his set. I'm going to be really sad when they call him back to his home planet.

A friend of mine saw them in Houston last night and said they played Veil of May and not Textures. Don't know if they closed with it though.WREKage-Paul wrote:Acoording to our friend William who drove over from Mississippi, "Veil of Maya" was in their setlist but was scrapped due to a keyboard patch issue.
