The 40th Anniversary of Metal
I was over at the Encyclopedia Metallum forum and found a little gem, among all the crap that is posted there.
Black Sabbath's S/T, Black Sabbath, was released on 2/13/70, which was a Friday.
That means that metal turns 40 this coming Saturday.

yeah actually i did.
Black Sabbath pioneered every subgenre of metal.
Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath- this song is pure evil, definitely the roots of black metal.
Paranoid by Black Sabbath- first thrash song
Children of the Grave- first death metal song
Electric Funeral- first doom song
probably more I can't think of off the top of my head.

Wow. I came of age during the Dio years and saw him twice (?) live, back in the day. And Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules have some really great songs on them.
But I am firmly in the Ozzy camp. Dio's rendition of those early songs (at least on Live Evil) is just ridiclously melodramatic.

Sabotage is my fave Ozzy-era Sabbath rec. Sounds like they're all insane by then. The early Sabbath is killer and campy all at once. Title track, NIB, The Wizard, yeah... Mob Rules, Heaven & Hell, and Born Again are my fave Sabbath recs.Knucklehead wrote:Wow. I came of age during the Dio years and saw him twice (?) live, back in the day. Ozzy's Blizzard and Diary are masterpieces, though. Great rhythm sec and flawless Heavy Metal guitar playing. Never stop listening to these records.
